Ohio State Earns Shootout Win At Wrigley Field

The Ohio State Buckeyes women's hockey team bounced back on a big state Saturday night defeating the top ranked Wisconsin Badgers 4-3 in a shootout as part of the Frozen Confines: Big Ten Hockey Series at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

The game saw three lead changes through 65 minutes, and a seven round shootout where Ohio State netminder Amanda Thiele stopped seven attempts and captain Jenna Buglioni scored the winner to give Ohio State the win and an extra point in conference play.

"It was super exciting, all the fans I'm sure enjoyed it," said netminder Amanda Thiele of the experience in a post game interview. "But we haven't had a win in a long time so that one was needed and it was a lot of fun doing it on this stage."

The win came only days after Wisconsin cruised through Ohio State taking a 6-0 win on Thursday.

Ohio State opened the scoring less than a minute into the game as Jordyn Petrie broke into the zone on a partial breakaway and beat Wisconsin netminder Ava McNaughton. After Caroline Harvey and Kirsten Simms each tallied in the opening period to give Wisconsin their first lead of the game, Makenna Webster knotted the game only 1:40 into the second period.

Heading into the third, the Buckeyes continued their trend of goals early in the period with Joy Dunne scoring on the doorstep. She celebrated in Wrigley Field fashion pretending to hit a baseball with her stick.

After Kelly Gorbatenko tied the game in the third for Wisconsin and overtime settled nothing, a shootout was needed to decide who would earn the extra point in WCHA conference play.

In the seventh round of the shootout, Ohio State captain Jenna Buglioni scored the winner.

The Buckeyes are back at the OSU Ice Rink next weekend to host Bemidji State in a two-game WCHA series. The Buckeyes and Beavers face off at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10 and 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11.
