Former Ohio State assistant coach Zach Smith, who was fired last summer after multiple domestic violence allegations, was arrested on Thursday in Ohio after an altercation at his children’s elementary school.

Smith was arrested Thursday afternoon after he got into a confrontation with staff members at Scioto Ridge Elementary School in Powell, Ohio, when he was not allowed to pick up his children at 3:10 p.m., according to WBNS10.

A Delaware County sheriff was called to the school, who confirmed that Smith was in violation of a civil protection order. He was then arrested and charged with a misdemeanor, per the report.

Smith’s ex-wife was also at the school on Thursday, per the report, and told the sheriff’s office that he was not allowed to pick up the children until after 6 p.m.

“Same old, same old. Absolutely malicious move by his ex-wife to have Zach arrested at their kids’ school when he was there to pick them up,” Smith’s attorney said in a statement to WBNS10. “She’s in contempt of court for not giving the kids to him last night which she was supposed to do. Just very sad for the children. One-hundred percent avoidable by both of them.”

Smith was fired after multiple domestic violence allegations surfaced, which resulted in a three-game suspension for head coach Urban Meyer. Meyer initially denied any knowledge of the allegations, and later apologized for not being accurate. The university also suspended athletic director Gene Smith for just more than two weeks.
