Official: Varane joins Como’s board
Former defender Raphael Varane was appointed as a board member of Como, the club announced in an official statement on Saturday.
The ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid star had joined the Serie A club as a player last July, but changed his mind after picking up an injury in the pre-season and eventually decided to hang up his boots in late September.
It was already rumoured that Varane could stay at Como in ‘a different role’ and the club now confirmed that he’ll be focusing on ‘youth development, education, and product innovation’.
Como announces appointment of Raphael Varane as board member
“Como 1907 is pleased to announce the appointment of Raphaël Varane as a board member,” an official statement published on the club’s official website read.
“Recently retired from professional football, Varane will bring his experience and leadership to this new role, marking the next chapter of his career off the pitch.
“Varane will collaborate with Osian Roberts, Como 1907’s Head of Development, and Juliette Bolon, Head of the Education Program, to support the club’s youth development efforts.
“His involvement will benefit not only the players but also the broader community through educational initiatives. By integrating academic, leadership, and vocational training into the youth programs, Varane aims to help young athletes prepare for life beyond football.
“In addition to focusing on youth and education, Varane will advise on Como 1907’s product development strategy, incorporating technology and innovation. From improving digital solutions to enhancing data analysis platforms and ticketing systems, Varane’s input will help guide Como 1907 as it evolves its approach to fan engagement and operational improvements.”
Varane’s appointment is part of a long-term strategy aimed at making the club a solid reality in Italian football, as the Indonesian owners were already responsible for bringing in ex-Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas as a player, before making him the first team’s coach.
Fabregas’ Como picked up eight points in their first seven Serie A games this season, as the club returned to the top-tier after a 21-year absence.
Commenting on his new role, Varane said: “Being a top-level sportsman comes with joy, sacrifice, and the constant drive to push beyond limits.”
“Throughout my career, I’ve been motivated by a desire to improve and strive for excellence. Transitioning from the field to the boardroom isn’t the end of my football journey; it’s a new beginning that I’m looking forward to. Joining the board of Como allows me to continue contributing to the sport while shaping its future.
“This new phase of my career feels like a second birth, not an ending. I’m not saying goodbye to football. Joining the Como 1907 Development Committee excites me, and I look forward to being part of an ambitious project that resonates with my values.
“Together, we will invest in youth development, expand educational opportunities, and innovate product solutions to bring the club’s vision to life.”
