Official: Real Madrid confirm ACL injury for 26-year-old star defender
Real Madrid’s worst fears have come true and it could not have arrived at a worse point in time.
Already neck-deep in a defensive crisis with David Alaba yet to recover from his ACL injury, Los Blancos had just two senior centre-backs to count on from the first day of the season.
Watching Eder Militao go down in excruciating pain in the first half against Osasuna, thus, sent the alarm bells ringing in the Spanish capital as his setback did not appear minor in any capacity.
After conducting initial examinations on Militao’s knee, Real Madrid have now officially confirmed the worst – the Brazilian has suffered an ACL injury.
Second time unlucky
As revealed in the official statement made by Real Madrid, the player has suffered a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee. Further, both menisci are said to be involved.
“After the tests carried out today on our player Eder Militao by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament with involvement of both menisci in the right leg. Militão will be operated on in the coming days,” the statement read.
This comes as a massive blow to Carlo Ancelotti’s side as the Brazilian is certainly ruled out for the remainder of the campaign and Rudiger is the only available senior centre-back for the time being.
The Brazilian will undergo surgery in the coming days and restart the long and tedious route back to fitness.
Implications on the team aside, it is a massive mental blow for Militao himself who only returned from an ACL injury to his left knee earlier this year. Being out for another year now can certainly not be easy on the defender.
As it stands, Los Blancos are expected to retain faith in Raul Asencio who starred in his debut earlier today. Making a signing in January, however, appears more probable than ever before.
