Manchester United have officially confirmed that Mason Greenwood has left the club and joined French giants Olympique de Marseille on a permanent deal.

United issued a statement via their official website saying, “Mason Greenwood has left Manchester United and joined French club Olympique de Marseille on a permanent transfer.”

“The 22-year-old English forward, who spent last season on loan at Getafe in Spain, made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals for United since making his debut in 2019.”

“We wish Mason all the best in his future career.”

Marseille have also confirmed Greenwood’s arrival through their official social media channels, as they posted a video of the forward in his new colours.

David Ornstein of The Athletic recently broke the news that Marseille had reached an agreement over personal terms with Greenwood over his switch to Stade Vélodrome.

It was stated that United are set to net €31.6million (£26.7m) from permanently parting ways with Greenwood.

This package consists of a fixed fee of €27.6m (£23.3m) and €4m (£3.4m) in add-ons. United also negotiated a huge sell-on clause in the deal.

Following his heroics in Spain with Getafe last term in which he won the club’s Player of the Season award, Greenwood alerted a number of his clubs to his availability.

The Englishman was strongly linked to outfits such as Juventus, Lazio, Valencia, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund.

However, in the last few days, it’s Marseille who stepped up their pursuit of the 22-year-old and eventually beat all other interested parties to his signature.

Greenwood last played for United in January 2022. He was arrested for attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. All charges against him were eventually dropped by the Crown Prosecution Services, who cited the withdrawal of material witnesses from the case.

United had planned to reintegrate Greenwood into Erik ten Hag’s squad but they ultimately abandoned their plan amidst fierce backlash and public outrage. The Red Devils subsequently sanctioned his loan move to Getafe, where he continued with his career.
