Lazio have announced the departure of Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro who rejoins Monza on loan until the end of the season.

The Background

The 32-year-old has been a Biancocelesti player since making the move from Salernitana in the summer of 2020. After two underwhelming campaigns at Formello, he joined Empoli on loan in 2022, before spending the previous campaign at Monza. The Ivorian rejoined Marco Baroni’s squad in the summer, but failed to seal a move away, so he remained on the sidelines during the first half of the season after being omitted from the Serie A and Europa League squads.

Lazio Announce Loaning Out Akpa Akpro to Monza

Nevertheless, Monza decided to resort to the experienced midfielder, hoping he would lend a hand in their attempts to escape relegation to Serie B, as they currently sit rock bottom in the standings. While this transfer has been in the air over the past few weeks, Lazio have now made it official through a statement posted on the club’s website.

SS Lazio announces that it has temporarily transferred the rights to the sporting performances of the footballer Jean Daniel Akpa Akpro to AC Monza.

Final Departure

Despite being labelled as a loan move, this transfer will effectively put an end to the player’s time with the Aquile once and for all, as his contract with Lazio will expire in June. So by the end of the season, Akpa Akpro will be a free agent. According to La Lazio Siamo Noi, the club has saved €1 million by offloading the Ivorian to Monza and loaning young Paraguayan striker Diego Gonzalez to Atlas.
