Official: Erik ten Hag has been sacked as Manchester United manager

Erik ten Hag has been sacked as manager of Manchester United.

The news first came from reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano today following a decision from club part owners and management team, Ineos.

The club have since confirmed the same while placing assistant manager Ruud van Nistelrooy in charge on interim basis.

The outcome was widely expected after a poor campaign last time around, that saw United finish a lowly eighth in the Premier League, was followed by a disastrous start to the current season, with the side lying in 14th position after nine games, behind the likes West Ham, who beat them on Sunday, Bournemouth, Fulham, Brentford and Nottingham Forest.

Ten Hag narrowly escaped dismissal in the summer, despite winning the FA Cup last season and the Carabao Cup the season before. It was reported that Thomas Tuchel was offered the job, but could not reach an agreement over power over transfers and his salary.

Ineos backed the incumbent manager with a new coaching staff, new contract and around £200 million of transfers over the summer.

Their decision is believed to have cost the club around £7 million in terms of compensation to be paid now versus what it would have cost them had they pulled the plug in June.
