Borussia Dortmund have announced that backup goalkeeper Alexander Meyer has signed a contract extension at the club until 2026.

On extending his contract at Dortmund, Meyer said: “I feel very comfortable in Dortmund, feel great appreciation for those responsible, the coaching staff, my teammates, the employees and our fans. For me, it is still not a matter of course to be allowed to wear the BVB jersey. That’s why I’m happy every day to be a part of this club. We have already been quite successful in the past two years, but it remains my big goal to be able to celebrate a title with the BVB family at Borsigplatz at the end of the season. I’m working on this with my teammates.”

The 33-year-old joined Dortmund in 2022 on a free transfer from Jahn Regensburg and has probably played more than he would have expected over the period due to first-choice goalkeeper Gregor Kobel being quite injury-prone for a keeper.

Last season, Meyer played nine times for Dortmund, eight in the Bundesliga and one in the Champions League.

The extension of Meyer’s contract continues a busy summer for Dortmund as they have already completed the signings of VfB Stuttgart duo Waldermar Anton and Serhou Guirassy but Die Schwarzgelben also continue to improve other areas in their squad with both full-backs as well as in midfield as the club looks to close the gap on Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich and vastly improve on their football quality compared to last season.
