Nunavut Fury To Become Territory's First Girls' Hockey Association

Nunavut is Canada's largest, most northern, and newest Territory. Announced this week, the Territory has launched their first ever girls' hockey association known as the Nunavut Fury Hockey Association.

"We’re thrilled to officially announce the launch of the Nunavut Fury Hockey Association—a groundbreaking initiative dedicated to empowering girls’ hockey players across Nunavut," the organization wrote on social media.

The organization outlined three key goals icnluding empowering players to dream big "and achieve bigger, both in hockey and in life," to highlight the strength and potential of Nunavut's girls hockey players, and to "build a legacy of strong, confident leaders who inspire future generations."

By land mass, Nunavut would be the 15th largest nation in the world, larger than every nation in continental Europe. For reference, Nunavut is roughly three times larger than France. By population however, there are only an estimated 41,000 residents in Nunavut, which would make it the least populated nation by density in the world. The population of Nunavut's capital city, Iqaluit, is estimated at just over 7,200.

Currently, the main competition in the North for boys' and girls' hockey is the biannual Arctic Winter Games. It's a competition that not only includes Canadian Territories, but also teams and athletes from Alaska, Greenland, and the Sámi people. In 2023, Team Nunavut's women's hockey entry was led by Charlotte Siksik, who currently plays for Arcadia University at the NCAA DIII level.

According to the Nunavut Fury, this development aims to have impacts on and off the ice for women and girls in the Territory.

"This is about more than hockey—it’s about creating opportunities, celebrating talent, and inspiring a generation of hockey players and leaders across Nunavut."
