NTV - CJON - Thursday, May 23, 2024 - 05:00 a.m. (ET) - Segment #4

. Welcome back to the ntv evening news. Our tonight's backstage pass takes us behind the scenes as ndtv's amanda mews chats with kander born director brad peyton about his latest big budget hollywood film. >> Oh, hello there I am amanda mews with ntv news or newfoundland broadcasting. >> So this is a newfoundland accent. You sound like someone from home. That is a great compliment. >> You're. Absolutely. I'm hoping that you feel at home with me as I do. >> I do. I recently had a virtual sit down interview with gander born brad peyton, the director behind the new sci fi action film atlas starring jennifer lopez. Good morning, atlas. Time to wake up. I'm awake. Peyton doesn't shy away from the epic action flicks he's known for directing dwayne johnson in adrenaline soaked films like rampage and san andreas along with the action packed comedy friendly film journey to the mysterious island. >> And cats and dogs the revenge of kitty galore. What do I do? >> Stop it. Brad peyton's films do have a common thread a visual challenge and lots of imagination. >> Part of the world creation of this movie was on another scale greater, larger, more expansive, more complicated than anything I'd ever done. >> So what you see in the movie is a bigger experience and it's saying a lot because I've sung san francisco, I've just destroyed chicago and now I'm destroying spaceships and creating alien planets. >> Okay, this is out of control. This planet is unstable and inhospitable. >> Atlas my name is smith. It's not really necessary. The futuristic sci fi film atlas tackles some present day fears when the only way to save humanity from an ai terrorist is to trust artificial intelligence itself. >> The thing that people have to remember I started developing this movie five years ago before I was the conversation that it is now. Now the movie is really studying the component of trust and how trust is an essential component to our are real relationships. I think most relationships are built of trust and respect and I think respect is something that's more easily earned than trust. And so I really focus on that. That's what drew me to the material. That's the element of it. That's to the human experience element which I think people whether they know it or not that's what's making it emotional is that this is what this person is going through as they're learning how to trust is just they're learning how to trust an ai that you know, represents everything they despise and mistrust in the world. >> Atlas this won't work if you don't trust me. >> Okay. >> Let's do this. Next week I'll have more from my interview with atlas director brad peyton as he speaks about working with j.lo and his thoughts on filmmaking in newfoundland and labrador. >> Atlas premieres on netflix on may the 24th. >> Don't worry we are simply the better versions of you with your backstage pass. >> I'm amanda mews. >> Well, amanda mews is back again this time she is in your community telling us about pride events. >> Well next weekend kicks off pride month and before we know it it's going to be st john's pride festival time. Joining us to talk a little bit about what that's going to look like is eddie sanker who is the co-chair external for st john's pride. So first of all eddie pretty exciting. Lots of exciting things happening this year. >> So tell us about some of the new things that will be a part of st john's pride. Yeah we're really excited this year so we we've got a lot of the same community events that people have come to learn and love like the bonfire that's been going on since the 70s that's happening out at topsail beach this year as well as the pride parade and pride in the park and like events that people come to expect quadrangle during their annual their annual bingo fundraiser and harveys pride on the pier is back again with gracious sponsorship from harveys home heating and we're really excited for that. This year the committee is also adding in a couple of new events. We wanted to we wanted to give an opportunity for older generations to come and share their experiences and they've told us that they have trouble plugging into different events that happened during the festival. So this year we're trying to introduce a component of intergenerational learning so we'll be having two panel discussions. One is going to focus on the evolution of life in st john's and in newfoundland and we're going to have a second one that's going to focus on the evolution of drag as an art in the city. So we're excited for those ones . And then the big big addition that we're doing this year is will be having this big dance party that we're inviting

people out to do. It's going to be called pride after dark and it's happening on the first friday of the festival on the 12th and I can't give away too many details because they've sworn to secrecy but tickets go on sale next friday and next week we'll be running a contest to kind of get some hype going and people can try and guess who the headliner is that we're and we're super excited to announce them. >> So I'm really excited if people want to when that launches next week kind of put in their guesses, where can they go to do that? So the best way to stay up to date on anything that we're doing is to sign up as a as a newsletter subscriber so you can go to a pride .ca. We have the event schedule listing there. If you're an artist and you want to submit your scope of work for the committee to consider for different opportunities, you can do that there as well and you can also sign up for the newsletter and whenever we have a big announcements we try and put it out that way and then every day during the festival we send out a newsletter saying this is what's happening today and encourage people to go check it out. Thank you so very much, eddie. No sweet. Thanks amanda. Well, that's what's happening in your community. >> Now let's take a look at entertainment. >> Tonight's entertainment rat brought to you by nafld hero.com. The tradition of the newfoundland hero continues free online enjoy complimentary online archives editions and new items to let me give you a little context for me. >> Hugh jackman is headed to sherwood forest. He's set to star in the death of robin hood as an aging and gravely injured version of the mythical outlaw offered one last chance at salvation. Filming is expected to begin next february. A24 snapped up the rights to the project considered one of the hottest properties up for bid at this year's cannes film festival. >> I have been in this business a long time. Yes. Another honor for cyndi lauper. The music legend is set to leave her mark in a handprint and footprints ceremony at the chinese theater in hollywood. The grammy emmy and toni winner will be honored tuesday, june 4th. >> This is an epic story of cosmic proportions. If the 126 minute runtime of the fall guy wasn't long enough for you, you're in luck. Universal has released an extended cut of the action comedy featuring an additional 20 minutes of never before seen footage. Both versions of the fall guy are now available on digital platforms. >> In hollywood, I'm david daniel and stay with us while we take one more break on the ntv evening news, our eddie scheer is going to be back to recap the weather forecast. >> And when we return, jim furlong will have today in historytioning of this ntv program is brought to you in part by your debt help professionals at bdo your next chapter is waiting let us help you write it Wall paper or paint. We make thousands of financialdecisions every day.
