So we'll tune in together (Announcer) You're watching Canada's Superstation ntv and tomorrow we'll bring a new dawn. And together who knows what we all can do . >> You've been watching rebroadcast of the ntv evening news hour. Thanks for watching. >> I'm toni marie wiseman. And I'm michael connors. Up next is a rebroadcast . >> >> It's thursday, may 23rd.

>> I'm toni marie wiseman. This is ntv news first edition ntv news first edition with your host toni marie wiseman and media ologist eddie scherer . Good evening. 1 in 5 people in our province are struggling with food security. That is just one of countless findings in month's vital signs report an annual snapshot of how people make ends meet. >> This year that report targets the cost of living. >> But when you see kind of in that when you break it down into 126 individuals so to break it down even further, we're talking about 1 in 4 then who are going to be food insecure on housing that's going to be 1 in 5 that there are 20 people if we were talking about, you know, a community of 100 that would be struggling to afford housing 31 who are having trouble just meeting those basic needs and then all of that is also coming through in terms of how loneliness and mental health challenges are of course are are becoming interplay it in there which is another piece that makes a lot of this kind of complex is that there are so many interrelated and interplay happening across those challenges for individuals. So it's really important to kind of look holistically at how that is happening to understand the challenges and then also to really imagine those solutions that maybe we can be coming forward with. >> The province's seniors advocate is using a new social media campaign to draw attention to ageism. >> Susan walsh says her office is hoping to hear from seniors about their hobbies and how they give back to their communities. >> Ages views can have very serious consequences in terms of abuse. We know and we've seen the media has also reported on situations where seniors are being abused even by their own families and this is often tied to the fact that oh, nanny lived her life oh she doesn't need this house, she doesn't need that money. These are all just views and so they're serious and they can be impactful. So as the office of the seniors advocate, we felt that june being seniors month was the perfect time for us to take on addressing ageism for seniors in newfoundland and labrador. And we decided the best way to do it would be a social media campaign. There's there's information here about what it's all about and then there's a very short application and the application really is only intended to we want to be able to put up the person's information and we want to be able to say what are they doing in their lives today at whatever age they are. That's rewarding to them. That's helping in their communities, helping their families. How is it that they're really experiencing positive aging in newfoundland and labrador? >> The impacts of abuse against young people can last a lifetime but identifying it can be extremely challenging in the education system today. The province announced funding for an online training program for grade 7 to 12 teachers to address sexual violence. >> Well, we're very pleased today to announce and this is made possible through the department of women and gender equality. It's an amount of $200,000 that's being of course allocated to education here. My colleague of course the minister and the department ultimately for what's called commit to kids program and it's all part of the gender based violence national action plan. Of course it's meant that's how it's made possible. So it's $200,000 to go through this program ultimately for training of teachers. So it's a resource that we're providing to teachers and administrators in our schools that's going to allow them more information and the availability of this resource. And then in terms of protecting children against violence, against sexual violence and understanding how to deal with these instances in schools should they arise. >> Well, it's time now for a look at the weather forecast. Eddie sheerr joins me live tonight. He's out and about I believe you were in bay roberts tonight. >> Eddy, what's going on? I am in bay roberts this evening. Toni, you were here at the song's stages and seafood festival which kicks off in the community this evening. It runs through the weekend and I know it's something that community and everyone here is very, very excited about. And joining me now to speak about that is chef rory mcpherson. Rory, thank you very much for joining me this evening. So I should call you chef. So chef, what's going to be happening here this evening and over the next few days? >> Well, tonight at the bay roberts arena we have hooked on local. So there's six local chefs from around saint john's region and other parts of newfoundland. Great to go with another one and we're going to see some great newfoundland seafood protein displayed in different ways. Tomorrow night is small plates again another six courses by six different chefs.

then on saturday we have our big finish, our big grand finale where we have a like a seven course dinner. There are still tickets available for that which can be purchased online. And then on sunday is newfoundland fish cake jam chips which I've won a couple of times but last year chef mark micro took home the crown and we have a group of 6 or 7 chefs will be vying for that as well. It's going to be a lot of fun. Again, tickets are available for the seafood or for the fish cake competition as well on sunday. So make sure you can pick those up at the door. Great great way to come out. Great way to spend some time. Beautiful bay roberts area. >> What could be better? It really is a beautiful area up here and bay roberts in around this whole this whole area of the avalon peninsula. And I must say even inside here did a wonderful job getting the arena ready to the bay arena ready for this festival. But you know, we're talking about, you know, the food tonight. It's a five course meal or six course meal. And that's all locally sourced. Right. And same thing for tomorrow. Exactly. All locally sourced. Majority is seafood. Like tonight actually I'm using some beautiful which isn't really top of mind for a lot of planners but it's very much like the codfish, you know? So I was very excited to get a chance to utilize that protein. You know you're gonna see scallops, you're going to see regular codfish, you're going to see salmon. So again, a wide variety of samplings, different techniques in preparing it. You're not going to be disappointed? >> No, I would say not and hopefully get to try some of that stuff because I know you know, I moved to newfoundland about ten years ago now and whenever I get to try like seafood that's fresh right from the water, right from our waters around newfoundland labrador it's just unbelievable. >> So good luck this evening. Well, thanks so much. And again, if you're in the bay roberts area, come check us out. >> Perfect. And I think if you want to get tickets I think they roberts.com bay roberts.com and you get all the information there on the event as well now it's certainly turned into a decent day today and I wish tomorrow is going to be similar but alas things are going to change a bit. >> Some rain is on the way but right now we can look at those temperatures across newfoundland and labrador and as you can see for many of us it's a good bit colder today than it was at this time yesterday. Specifically on the avalon peninsula right now looking at just six degrees in town, ten degrees in gander corner brook at 15 degrees right now looking at five degrees up in cartwright just won the name labrador city goose bay clocking in at six degrees this hour. Now not all areas are as chilly as the avalon and the northeast . Look at stephenville, 14 degrees right now 13 and you're like 12 and rocky harbour but just ten in our agenda at this hour and let's see currently reporting three degrees. We compare the temps right now to this time yesterday saint john's we are four degrees colder in port of ast right now it is seven degrees colder than the same time yesterday afternoon. >> Now we take a look at the satellite picture and you can see many areas of eastern newfoundland seeing those clear skies but the rain is in the process of pushing on to the west coast and that rain is going to become widespread across western areas of newfoundland as evening and will spread across the rest of the island overnight as an area of low pressure currently swirling off to our west begins to work its way in and future cancels show this picture rather well. So there's the rain and even some snow working its way through parts of labrador this evening. By midnight the rain is falling across most areas of newfoundland and by tomorrow morning we are waking up to showers in the east. Rain through central showers in the west coast and some rain and snow in parts of eastern and interior sections of labrador throughout the morning hours tomorrow the avalon will see some rain that works offshore after lunchtime and that will set us up for a cloudy and dry ish afternoon. But we're kind of between systems tomorrow even though tomorrow may be dry saturday at the moment looking like it's going to be rainy for some areas of newfoundland while the labrador dries out and also saturday some areas of the island may very well see some wet snow specifically on the northern peninsula. Now speaking of that snow, some parts of labrador are going to see significant snowfall overnight into tomorrow evening, mainly into areas west of the coast and north of the trans labrador highway areas on the coast for the most part. Less than five centimeters of snow on the island. We're going to see some significant rainfall in some areas over the next 24 hours or so. Look at that swath there from your corner brook through grand falls windsor on to the northeast coast it looks like between 20 and 30mm of rain will fall in this area while areas for the north and south of there we'll see much less in the way of the rain. Eastern newfoundland tonight showers move in 2 to 4 over the overnight lows. You can bet there'll be some areas of fog. No surprise there with the day tomorrow highs of 6 to 13 across eastern and northeastern newfoundland periods of rain specifically during the first half of the day more in the way of showers in the afternoon. Some areas making a few sunny breaks late but I'm not counting on that right now. Western half of newfoundland 37 for the overnight lows with the rain moving in for your day tomorrow. Showers along the west coast rain through central in the morning and generally cloudy skies for most by afternoon until labrador temperatures overnight dipping into the single digits below freezing along the coast with areas of wet snow rising to
