Notre Dame reserve wide receiver Javon McKinley was arrested on Sunday after he got violent with two campus security officers who were attempting to escort him back to his dorm.

According to the Indianapolis Star, campus police officers found McKinley, 20, passed out and unresponsive in the backseat of his Uber ride around 4 a.m. on Sunday morning. The officers — Adis Ibrekic and Lt. Laurie Steffen — roused McKinley with several sternum rubs and started walking him back to his room after they smelled alcohol on his breath. Things went downhill from there. Via the Indy Star:

According to the report, McKinley, “unsteady on his feet,” then “tensed up” and tried to leave in the opposite direction of his dorm. Officers were concerned about McKinley “trying to wander off onto campus in his condition.”

In the officers’ attempt to restrain McKinley on a cold night, he reportedly punched both officers “in a rude, insolent or angry manner,” causing pain.

McKinley was then arrested with the assistance of several Notre Dame firefighters, who helped restrain him. He was taken to the St. Joseph County Jail, where he remained until Monday when he was charged with three misdemeanors: two counts of battery and one count of illegal consumption of alcohol. He was released on $250 bail and is expected back in court to be arraigned on Tuesday.

Notre Dame spokesperson Dennis Brown released a statement about the incident. Via the Indy Star:

“The incident is being handled by the criminal justice system. As for internal discipline, we do not publicly discuss specific cases and impose sanctions as warranted.”

McKinley was a four-star recruit and a highly touted receiver at the start of his Notre Dame career. He played in six games in his freshman year, but missed the entire 2017 season after breaking his fibula in practice. As a redshirt sophomore in 2018, he played in just four games and made zero catches.
