‘Not fair or even’ – Postecoglou fumes at decision to allow Newcastle equaliser in Spurs defeat

Ange Postecoglou was left fuming with the decision to allow Newcastle’s equaliser in their 2-1 win over his Spurs side.

Tottenham went ahead early on through Dominic Solanke before goals from Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak saw Newcastle continue their strong run of form.

But Postecoglou was left angry with the decision to allow Gordon’s goal, having seen the ball strike the arm of Joelinton in the build up.

Explaining the decision to allow the goal, the Premier League match centre said: “The referee’s call of goal was confirmed by VAR, who checked for a potential handball by Joelinton in the build-up and deemed that his arm was by his side, in a natural position and the contact was accidental.”

But Postecoglou vented his frustrations after the game: “I don’t feel hard done by, I think that’s just the way they want to do things,” he told TNT Sports.

“The last thing I want is an explanation.

“I’m hugely proud of the players. It’s a game we should have won and it deserved to win, and all things being equal we would have won but these things aren’t equal at the moment.

“I couldn’t be prouder of them, the way they played, their attitude, their ability to be resilient in the most extreme circumstances, I couldn’t be prouder of them.

In his post-match press conference, he continued: “I know what everyone wants me to say, but all I’ll say is that on any other day, on a fair and even playing ground, we would have won that game. Simple as that.”
