'It's Not Every Game Where You're Going To Score Five In The Second': Seth Jarvis, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Frederik Andersen, Rod Brind'Amour

The Carolina Hurricanes went turbo-mode in the second period Thursday night, scoring five straight goals in a 7-4 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Lenovo Center.

The Canes trailed 2-0 after one period, but a five-goal outburst in a span of less than 10 minutes put Carolina on the path to victory.

Seth Jarvis (x2), Eric Robinson, Jackson Blake, Sebastian Aho, Jordan Martinook and Jesperi Kotkaniemi all scored while Frederik Andersen stopped 18 shots in the win.

After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour along with Jarvis, Andersen and Kotkaniemi spoke with the media. Here's what they had to say:

Rod Brind'Amour

On the power play providing the team a spark:
We had some good looks and then good execution. Kind of what we talked about before. Guys in the right places, good rotation and then obviously a nice pass there. That got the period started off on the right foot, that's for sure.

On if he feels like he's getting four lines all clicking at the same time as of late: That's the goal. Obviously every team wants to be able to roll the lines and play similarly. Obviously there's going to be different skill levels on different lines, but still there's certain things everybody's gotta do. I think after the first period, we did that.

On Seth Jarvis' growth: He's growing still as a player. I don't know if he's getting better skill wise, I think he's pretty good already. But I think those kinds of players, as they grow, they're thinking the game two or three steps ahead. I think that's where you're seeing the growth in his game both offensively and defensively.

On if the second period showed just how dangerous his team can be: I think any team can do that and they got a couple back like bang, bang too. Hockey's just weird that way. That's why you want to dominate possession. You want to have the puck because you can score at any time. And you can't take breathers. Because you could be all over a team and then a bad break or a bad bounce here or there and all of a sudden it's in your net as we saw tonight.

On Jackson Blake being able to shake off bad plays and get back to contributing: It's a learning curve. Tonight will be a perfect one learning moment because we won the game and he played good. It doesn't always happen like that where you make a mistake and then make a good play after. But he knows it and he's going to make more of them. What's more important to me is how you respond. It's always about your next shift and he made up for it.

On the way he handled the first intermission: Actually, in a situation like that, where it was not a good start and really just bad mental breakdowns on a couple of the goals, I don't have to say anything. Everybody knows. There's a difference. Some nights you know when you have to say a little more but that one was pretty obvious and I'm glad with the way we responded, that's for sure.

On Frederik Andersen: Goaltending is critical. You have to have it. Tonight was a weird one. Didn't really have a lot, but early he had a couple and then a couple of bad bounces in front of him and I don't know how much you're going to do about it. Tough night probably to evaluate, but overall what you're getting at is the key. You have to have that position be consistent and it has to give you a chance to win and actually it has to win you games sometimes. That's what he's capable of and Kooch is too. I think it's a good one-two punch when they're together.

On if he thinks the Jesperi Kotkaniemi line playing more physical and direct is leading to increased offensive success: It would for anyone, being a little more straight line. Neci is obviously the one guy there that is dynamic, but he's big too. He can play that way. The other two are more, I think, identical in the way they need to play. That sixth goal was kind of a direct reflection of how that works. We need all four lines playing a kind of similar style and contribute.

Seth Jarvis

On the team rallying back:
We always have confidence in ourselves and especially with the way we've been playing the last four or so games. We knew we weren't starting great but that it was going to come and that's kind of what happened.

On what was said in the first intermission: Everyone kind of knew where we were at and what we needed to do to kind of get the game back in. Obviously it's not every game where you're going to score five in the second, but just kind of kickstart it on the power play and then kind of roll from there. I think we all kind of knew kind of what we had to do.

On the power play finally breaking through: It's been a real rough ride for us, so it was nice to get one and get a little bit of our swagger back.

On Sebastian Aho's pass to him: Couldn't do much more than put it in myself. It was just nice to finally see one go in.

On the second period: It was great. It was kind of a little weird. You score five, let up two and all of a sudden you're only up one. So there was a lot of range of emotions, but I think we did a good job of just staying level headed, knowing we played a good game and had just a couple of lapses that led to their goals.

On the team being dangerous offensively: When we're playing good, I think we're as dangerous as anybody. You saw that Blakey made a couple of great plays, especially on Fishy's goal. Knocking it down and giving it him and Fishy made a great shot. Knowing that we have that in us, we always believe it, but just to see it come to fruition was nice.

On Jordan Staal setting up the Jordan Martinook goal: He switched skates after the first, so he was flying in the second. He came out there, caught the guy sleeping a little bit and kickstarted that whole play. It was just a great job.

On tonight being his first four-point game: I believe so. Had a couple [three-point nights] but it was nice to get over that hump.

On Shayne Gostisbehere playing tonight after becoming a dad: He's a daddy now and you could tell. He had that strength in him. It was impressive. He kind of came in and he had Chipotle before the game and you couldn't even tell.

On Frederik Andersen: You saw it again. In his first game, he stopped like four breakaways and he looked like he didn't miss a beat and then tonight, he made a lot of big saves and there's a lot of comfort with having him back there. Just the calmness he brings is really fun.

On if he feels like the team is starting to snowball: No. We struggled for a while and it always felt like it was coming but never really did. We weren't winning much so you just have to take it every day. Every day is a new day. We don't look forward to anything and we don't look back on anything. Every day is just a new challenge and I think that's what's been working these last couple of games. We're not riding a low or high, we're just staying even-keeled like everyone says you're supposed to.

On the team having four lines that seem to be rolling: It's been nice to put anybody out and know they're going to create offense, but the biggest part is knowing that they're going to keep the puck out of our net and play a sound defensive game. I think that's what has instilled the confidence in Roddy playing everybody. Throughout the lineup knowing that whoever is out there is going to do their job and we're going to come away with the win.

On being a go-to guy: That's what I think my biggest job is. To bring energy and change the momentum for our team. Whether it's through a goal or just through a hard working shift, a hard backcheck, whatever it is. Just to be able to flip it for a little bit and just give the boys a little bit of life. That's what I think my main goal is.

On Jesperi Kotkaniemi's scoring streak: He's sniping now. It's nice. He didn't shoot the puck for like 30 games, now he's scoring, shooting the puck. It's nice to see him have that confidence to tickle it a little.

Frederik Andersen

On reaching the 300 win milestone:
Makes a long season a little more fun. I think this week there's been a lot for this locker room in terms of both on the ice and off the ice milestones so it's been cool to have a nice group in here and to celebrate stuff like that together. It brings us closer.

On how he feels being back playing games again: It's good. I feel good. In the Chicago game, some of the reads I wanted to do a little bit better, but overall I felt pretty good. A game like tonight was a little bit back and forth obviously and you wish looking back to play somethings a little bit different, but obviously the first one was a good surprise shot. The two in the second was good traffic and one of those things where I have to do a better job of fighting through all of that, but otherwise, just move on and get that next one. I thought we came right back. In the second obviously we pushed back really well and then got a good lead. It was nice to see a good team win.

On the goal support: You don't win games in this league without any goal support. A good illustration of that tonight.

On his assist: Anytime you can help the D out, obviously this team likes to pressure the D a lot, so tried to bypass them and breakout a little bit easier and that ended up going pretty well tonight.

On being a part of the locker room again: It's fun. A lot more fun than sitting up top, I'll tell you that. Feels good to be in the room again and a little bit closer to the team. It isn't as easy as you think to be up top and watching from afar. It's fun.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi

On the game:
It was kind of the same as the Chicago Wolves game me and Juha [Jaaska] were watching last night. Kind of same story it looked like there for a little bit. It's nice to get a couple of goals for the team. It's been a little tougher to get goals on the board so glad to get that.

On Seth Jarvis referring to him as a sniper: You know, he's not wrong. Nah, I'm just kidding. It's good to get a couple of goals. It's been a bit of a tougher stretch there for a while. I'm just a big believer in working hard and thinking that it's going to pay off at some point.

On his line: We try to play fast, try to play hard, give Neci the puck and then he's going to do the magic with it. Then just try to get open.

On if felt any pressure when he saw how wide open the net was on his goal: Yeah, I almost dropped my stick there. The pass surprised me a little bit, but glad that went in.

On the feelings on the bench during the second period: It was interesting. I think everyone was just thinking of finding a way to shut it down here, thinking about what's going on and then just to refocus. I think that's what we did and had a good third there.

On the team outshooting Columbus 24-3 in the second period: I'd rather do that than be on the opposite side. I think our style of play, if you control the puck and get a lot of shots, the other team gets tired easily. I think we did a good job with that.

On having four lines clicking: I think we've had a couple of good games here lately and it's starting to look like us again. I think we had a little tough stretch there back and forth, win and lose so just trying to establish how we want to be as a team.

On Frederik Andersen: It's great. He's just a great guy and so calm in the net. I think that calms everyone down in front of him too. It's great to have him back.

On Shayne Gostisbehere: That's great you know. I would be pretty nervous or a wrecking ball after what happened to him. But it's great that that happened to someone like him. He's going to be a great dad for sure. Can't wait to see the little fellow.

On Seth Jarvis' comment about him finally starting to shoot the puck: Yep. I knew that part was coming. It was a little too nice of him just to call me a sniper. But you know, he's scoring a lot so trying to give him a little competition there.
