No, Patrick Mahomes didn’t actually ask refs to say when he’s going to be hit

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (15) runs the ball against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, Nov. 10, 2024, at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

CBS Sports broadcasters Kevin Harlan and Trent Green had a laugh when the network’s microphones caught an interesting exchange Sunday during the Chiefs-Broncos game.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes had scrambled for a 2-yard gain when he was hit out of bounds. An illegal formation penalty on Jawaan Taylor wiped out the gain at Arrowhead Stadium.

Mahomes could be heard saying to an official: “Could you let me know if he gets close?”

Green said he’d never heard that before in a game, and some fans watching were certain Mahomes was looking for special treatment from the officials.

But former Chiefs offensive lineman Mitchell Schwartz wrote on X: “I think the announcers had a wrong read of the ‘can you let me know when he’s close’ comment. My best guess is Pat was asking for them to let him know when Jawaan is close to being offsides. Don’t think it had anything to do with defenders being close to him.”

This is the clip and you can hear Mahomes also say something about a helmet, which would make sense about the illegal formation question for the official.

While some fans think everything in the NFL is rigged, there is simply no way Mahomes would ask an official to let him know if he’s about to be hit.
