With the season halfway done, it’s a natural time to project who might win some of the big awards come May.

Rio Ferdinand was on his Youtube channe, quoted via talkSPORT, discussing who the manager of the year was at this point with former teammate Owen Hargreaves. Hargreaves fancies Liverpool coach Arne Slot:

“He’s done unbelievable,” Hargreaves said of Enzo Maresca on Ferdinand’s Youtube show:

“But I’m saying if you’re top of the league and best team in the Champions League, then it’s Arne.”

Ferdinand came out fighting in favour of Maresca:

“No, no, no, I think he’s great. But I’m saying the level of change within the clubs is very different. [Maresca] has closed that margin more. [Slot] has had a wonderfully settled ship. The ownership in Chelsea is so fragmented, it’s in the papers every other day,” the former defender explained.

“[Slot] has had a new sporting director but it’s not unstable. It’s still a stable environment. There’s no noise. When Klopp was there, there was no noise. I’m fighting Maresca’s corner. He’s had more fires to put out than probably half of the league. And he’s stomped them out.”

Many points left to be won in Premier League debut campaigns

Chelsea fans don’t really care whether Maresca is the best manager of the season or the second best – the only thing that matters is their team has taken a huge jump forward this season and is getting great results after some really tough times.

Whether or not Maresca is the manager of the season will depend on what happens between now and the end of the season -there’s plenty of time for things to go dramatically in one direction or the other, so getting too het up in a debate like this is a little pointless.
