No. 10 Oklahoma State survives at Texas in OT thanks to gift interception
Oklahoma State is lucky to leave Austin with a victory.
The No. 10 Cowboys escaped with a 13-10 win in overtime over Texas on Saturday thanks to an overtime interception by Ramon Richards.
OSU kicked a field goal to start overtime and with Texas facing third-and-4 at the Oklahoma State 6, Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger simply threw the ball up in the end zone with no Texas receiver in the area.
Had Ehlinger thrown the ball away Texas would’ve been able to kick a field goal and potentially send the game to a second overtime.
It’s also Ehlinger’s second brutal overtime turnover to lead to a Texas loss. At USC in September, the freshman fumbled and the Trojans subsequently kicked a game-winning field goal.
Oklahoma State (6-1) was stymied by Texas’ defensive front all day and averaged less than three yards a carry. And Texas got constant pressure on Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph too. That pressure probably played in to coach Mike Gundy’s reasoning to play for overtime in the fourth quarter instead of go for the win.
It was still a curious decision given Oklahoma State’s offensive power. Oklahoma State had 1:07 left in the quarter when it got the ball at its own 8. But yet after a Justice Hill run got the Cowboys out to the 21 on the second play, OSU got conservative and kept running the ball.
Texas (3-4) started calling timeouts and ended up getting the ball back with 19 seconds left but wasn’t able to do anything miraculous to avoid OT.
Rudolph finished 25-of-38, passing for 282 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions. It’s the first time he hasn’t thrown a touchdown since the Cowboys’ loss to Oklahoma in the 2016 regular season finale.
