The Nightmare Before Christmas? Ottawa Senators Star Goalie Linus Ullmark Injured In Edmonton On Sunday Night

Riding a personal seven-game winning streak, there didn't seem to be anything that could cool off Ottawa Senators goalie Linus Ullmark.

Almost on cue, the injury bug slithered into Rogers Place in Edmonton on Sunday night and basically said, "Hold my beer."

Ullmark left the game in Edmonton during the first intermission after suffering an upper body injury. It's unclear what happened in the opening period that led to his exit.

With backup Anton Forsberg already out, the Senators' top option is 22-year-old Leevi Merilainen, who started and won on Saturday night in Vancouver and was thrust into action in Edmonton less than 24 hours later.

Ironically, the young Finnish goalie got the start against the Canucks, in part, because the Sens wanted to reduce the risk of the veteran Ullmark getting hurt in a back-to-back scenario. Ullmark was briefly shelved by injury back in October.

The Senators aren't likely to give details on Ullmark's status. When it comes to injuries, they never do. It'll either be "he'll be out for a while," or "just a precaution, nothing too serious."

Over the previous seven games, Ullmark is 7-0, allowing seven goals in total during that stretch. That's helped the Senators climb into a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference so Ullmark's disappearance from the lineup is the last thing anyone in Ottawa wanted to see, particularly if it's something serious.

In his absence, the Senators' six game winning streak came to an end on Sunday with a 3-1 loss to the Oilers. The Sens are glad now to have a five-day holiday break, and hope that's enough time for Ullmark to heal up.
