Athletic Club star and known Barcelona target Nico Williams has on Tuesday been warned that a move to the Camp Nou may in fact not be the best thing for his career.

The name of wide-man Williams has of course stood out as the headline one in the Spanish media for some time now.

As much comes amid the widespread understanding that the 22-year-old has been identified as priority transfer target of those behind the scenes at the aforementioned Barcelona.

The Blaugrana are ready to trigger Williams’ release clause at any moment, requiring just the final okay from the player himself.

And yet, as alluded to above, on Tuesday, the Spanish international has been sent something of a message of caution…

As much has come by way of one of his veteran teammates in Bilbao.

Speaking during an exchange with the media (as cited by Mundo Deportivo), new Athletic captain Óscar de Marcos was inevitably drawn on the speculation linking his teammate with a move to Barcelona.

And defender De Marcos made use of the opportunity to warn Nico that ‘not everything that glitters is gold’:

“It seems that there is a tide that when Barça wants you, you have to go, otherwise you make a mistake, but many times you have to keep in mind that not everything that glitters is gold. You have to evaluate where you are. For Nico, it is a delicate situation. There is a lot of noise from outside and it seems that this pressure can get to you, but I would like everyone to make their own decisions. He is an Athletic player, he will have the final say, and we trust that he will continue with us. I think the best thing for him is to continue at Athletic.”
