NHL Three Stars: Craig Anderson’s emotional victory

No. 1 Star: Craig Anderson, Ottawa Senators

It couldn’t be anyone else. Anderson had a 37-save, 2-0 shutout of Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday night, returning to the Sens after taking a leave of absence when his wife was diagnosed with cancer. She encouraged him to rejoin the team after backup Andrew Hammond was injured, and Anderson’s first game back was a brilliant, emotional win.

No. 2 Star: Colton Sceviour, Florida Panthers

Congrats to the Panthers forward on his first NHL hat trick, as Florida defeated the Detroit Red Wings, 5-2. “I can’t take too much credit though. I think all three goals were shots from the blue,” he said. Oh well … two goals in 23 seconds in the first period remains pretty darn impressive. And he added an assist for a four-point day.

No. 3 Star: Michael Grabner, New York Rangers

The speedy forward tallied his first hat trick since Feb. 2011 in the Rangers’ 6-1 domination of the Tamp Bay Lightning. J.T. Miller and Kevin Hayes had three-point nights as well.

Honorable Mention: The New York Islanders had five different goal scorers in routing the Toronto Maple Leafs, 5-1. Thomas Greiss made 33 saves. … Marcus Johansson scored two goals and Braden Holtby made 22 saves in the Washington Capitals’ 3-1 win over the Calgary Flames. … Corey Crawford made 32 saves, Jonathan Toews scored his first of the season and the Chicago Blackhawks didn’t give up a power-play goal in their 3-0 win over the Los Angeles Kings. … Brandon Manning’s shorthanded goal at 8 minutes of the third period to give the Philadelphia Flyers a 4-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. … Kyle Okposo scored two goals and Robin Lehner made 37 saves to give the Buffalo Sabres a 3-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets. It was Lehner’s first game back after missing three straight with a “stomach illness.” Yuck.

Did You Know? Claude Giroux extended his NHL-leading point streak to nine games

Dishonorable Mention: The ice at the Barclays Center was a slushy mess. Again. … James van Riemsdyk and Tyler Bozak were a minus-4. … Minus-3 for the Lightning: Tyler Johnson, Ondrej Palat, Brayden Point, Jason Garrison and Andrej Sustr. Ben Bishop was on the hook for all six goals. … Frans Nielsen, Dylan Larkin and Mike Green were a minus-3. … Petr Mrazek was pulled after giving up four goals on 10 shots.
