Ryan Reynolds addresses rumours that he is interested in buying Ottawa Senators

The Ottawa Senators may have a famous new face leading the franchise very soon.

On Tuesday's episode of The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds confirmed his previously reported interest in buying and owning the Senators.

"I am trying to do that. It's very expensive, so I need a partner with really deep pockets," Reynolds joked with Fallon. "It's called a 'consortium' when you form a group together to buy an entity. It's a fancy way of saying I need a sugar mommy or a sugar daddy."

The Senators' board of directors announced last Friday that the team is officially for sale, months after the death of longtime owner Eugene Melnyk. Melnyk's daughters, Olivia and Anna, inherited ownership of the franchise following their father's death.

According to a recent Sportico report, the Senators are valued at $655 million. The franchise could be sold for over a billion dollars, per the Ottawa Business Journal.

Reynolds explained his connection to Ottawa and how important hockey was in the community in his childhood.

"I grew up in Vancouver, which has my heart always, but I also grew up in Ottawa," the 46-year-old said. "I spent a long time in Vanier there, which is a little town inside Ottawa, a little community.

"Children are eased out of the womb in ice skates in Canada," Reynolds joked. "They're ready to go. NHL-ready by the time they're four."

Reynolds is one of the highest-grossing film actors of all-time, with a worldwide box office gross of over $5 billion, mostly on the back of his role as the title character in Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018).

The Vancouver native is also co-owner of Welsh soccer club Wrexham A.F.C. after he bought the club along with actor Rob McElhenney in November 2020. The pair starred and produced a documentary about their takeover, titled Welcome to Wrexham, which premiered on FX on Aug. 24, 2022.
