St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong made a pair of noteworthy moves this week, parting ways with winger Brandon Saad and trading defenseman Scott Perunovich to the New York Islanders.

On Wednesday, the Blues and Saad reportedly mutually agreed to terminate his contract after he clears unconditional waivers on Friday. The Athletic's Jeremy Rutherford reported they attempted to trade Saad, who managed only seven goals in 43 games this season, but couldn't find any takers for a struggling forward with a year on his contract and an average annual value of $4.5 million.

The move would make Saad a UFA, enabling him to sign a contract with another team this season. He must do so before the March 7 trade deadline to be eligible to play in the post-season.

The Hockey News' Michael DeRosa listed the Colorado Avalanche, Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning as good fits for Saad.

Rutherford speculated the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals and Dallas Stars could come calling. Saad has ties to Oilers GM Stan Bowman from their days with the Chicago Blackhawks and to Leafs coach Craig Berube from their time together in St. Louis.

Turning to the New York Islanders, center Brock Nelson has been the frequent subject of trade conjecture this season. However, right winger Kyle Palmieri has also surfaced in the rumor mill.

Like Nelson, the 33-year-old Palmieri is UFA-eligible on July 1. Larry Brooks of the New York Post claimed the New Jersey Devils were interested in bringing him back. Palmieri skated for the Devils from 2015-16 until traded to the Islanders before the 2021 trade deadline.

The Islanders have been on a tear lately, winning five-straight games to move within four points of the final Eastern Conference wild-card berth. If they remain in the playoff chase, they could be reluctant to part with Palmieri or Nelson.

Speaking of New York teams fighting to stay in post-season contention, the New York Rangers, with a record of 8-3-3 in January, have battled their way back into the wild-card chase. That's raised the possibility they won't become sellers by the deadline.

Pending UFA defenseman Ryan Lindgren was assumed to be a trade candidate. He was reportedly part of the Rangers' failed trade proposal to the Vancouver Canucks for J.T. Miller earlier this month.

Lindgren told Brooks that he wanted to remain a Ranger. Like the Islanders with Palmieri and Nelson, that could depend on where the club sits in the standings by March 7.
