On To The NHL Record For Hutson?

The Bell Centre was rocking on Monday night when Lane Hutson broke the franchise record for the longest point streak by a rookie defenseman when he got an assist on Patrik Laine's goal.

On Thursday, when the Canadiens host the Pittsburgh Penguins, Hutson will have the opportunity to join Detroit Red Wings Moritz Seider in third place in the league since 1988-89 if he records a point.

Providing he succeeds on Thursday, he'll have a shot to join newly retired Kevin Shattenkirk in second place if he gets another point on Saturday night when Montreal visits the Winnipeg Jets. Not only are the Manitoba outfit one of the top teams in the league, but they are also one of the stingiest when it comes to giving up goals. In 29 games, they've only given 75 goals. Their number one goaltender, Connor Hellebuyck is second league wide in goals-against average (2.14) and save percentage (.920).

If he ties Shattenkirk with a nine-game point streak, he'll need points in the next six games to join former Philadelphia Flyers blueliner Shayne Gostisbehere with a 15-game point streak in first place. The rearguard established the mark back in the 2015-16 season.

Looking at the schedule, if he does manage to tie him, it would be on December 28 against the Florida Panthers and he'd get a chance to break the record on December 29 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He still has a long way to go before then though and as he said himself yesterday in the post game media,

It's definitely pretty cool, but you know the guys that really get remembered are the guys that win a lot of hockey games and really do something special here. I think where we're headed, I think we're going in a great direction and we look forward to more games.

As impressive as the rookie blueliner has been, he still doesn't care for the spotlight all that much and prefers to bring the conversation back to the team and the ultimate goal, winning games.
