The Nashville Predators agreed to an eight-year contract extension with star forward Filip Forsberg, the team announced on Saturday.

The deal is worth close to $70 million and carries a cap hit of $8.5 million per season, according to multiple reports. Forsberg was scheduled to hit unrestricted free agency on July 13.

Forsberg, 27, scored 42 goals and added 42 assists in 69 games in a career-best 2021-22 campaign. He holds the Predators' franchise records for career goals and most goals in a single season.

Forsberg was selected 11th overall in the 2012 draft by the Washington Capitals before being traded to the Predators. The native of Sweden has spent his entire 10-year career with Nashville, recording 220 goals and 249 assists in 566 games.

Predators general manager David Poile told earlier this offseason that Forsberg's contract would carry a no-movement and no-trade clause.

"We don't love doing that, but Forsberg has made that as part of the negotiations and that will be part of his contract," Poile said.

Poile has had a busy start to his summer. In addition to navigating the NHL draft, the Predators have already locked up Forsberg on a long-term deal and acquired two-time Stanley Cup champion Ryan McDonagh in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning on July 3 to bolster Nashville's defense corps.

"A lot of our players reached out to me and said how happy they were that we were able to acquire [McDonagh], and that's going to be a big boost for our team," Poile said, via

Nashville finished the 2021-22 season in fifth place in the Central Division with a 45-30-7 record. The Predators snuck into the playoffs as the Western Conference's lowest-seeded team and were swept by the Colorado Avalanche in the first round.
