NHL playoffs: What you need to know for Monday

The Stanley Cup playoffs are on. Each day, we'll keep you updated on the important news involving players, starting lineups, injuries and more. Check back throughout the day to stay in the know.

Tied at a game apiece, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals continue their Eastern Conference semifinal matchup with Game 3 tonight (8 p.m. ET, CBC, CBC Sports app).

Maatta will not play

Penguins defenceman Olli Maatta, who was on the receiving end of a Brooks Orpik hit that resulted in a suspension during Game 2, will not play tonight, coach Mike Sullivan confirmed Monday morning.

Derrick Pouliot was in the lineup in Maatta's place.

Pouliot's last game was on April 9 against the Philadelphia Flyers in the regular season.

More interestingly, Marc-Andre Fleury was the backup to Penguins starting goaltender Matt Murray. Fleury has missed all of the playoffs because of a concussion.

Orpik out after suspension

The Capitals will be without Orpik for Games 3, 4 and 5 after he was handed a three-game suspension for his hit on Maatta.

While talking to reporters after Monday's morning skate, Orpik accepted blame for the hit calling the suspension fair, and saying "it was a pretty bad mistake."

Dmitry Orlov, who was a healthy scratch during Game 2, is expected to draw back into the lineup to take Orpik's place.

Seguin, Eaves still out for Dallas

Both Tyler Seguin and Patrick Eaves took part in the Dallas' morning skate on Monday, but coach Lindy Ruff said neither player is expected to travel with the team to St. Louis for Games 3 and 4.

He did leave the door open for them playing in those games, however, saying both could rejoin the team if they felt good enough to play.

Dallas plays in St. Louis on Tuesday and Thursday.
