Toronto Maple Leafs star forward Mitch Marner spoke on Wednesday for the first time since he was carjacked while heading to a movie on Monday evening, releasing the following statement on social media:

According to initial reports and later confirmed by police and the Maple Leafs, the All-Star winger was robbed in the west end of Toronto by three suspects carrying two handguns and a knife.

Per the Toronto Sun, the suspects approached Marner and his friends wearing masks, demanding the keys to his Range Rover.

Thankfully, the group did not have any guns pointed directly at them, according to the report.

Interestingly, the Sun’s source relayed that the carjackers did not know their target was Marner, and were simply interested in his luxury vehicle.

As far as his well-being, Marner was not physically hurt, though he was reportedly “shaken up” by the altercation.

Marner, understandably, didn't speak to the media during the Maple Leafs' locker cleanout availabilities on Tuesday. There wasn't much to be said, but some of Marner's teammates spoke briefly on the incident.

"It's scary, that's life. That's not hockey,” forward Jason Spezza said.

Linemate and good friend Auston Matthews also chimed in:

"I'm just happy he's OK and he wasn't hurt," Matthews said. "I don't really know much more than you guys do but it's great to see him here today. I can't imagine that's a fun experience to go through. We're all just glad he's OK."

The Sun reached out to Toronto Mayor John Tory on Monday for comment on the incident, to which he stated his intense condemnation.

"My initial reaction is how dare someone do that to anyone in our city,” Mayor Tory told the Sun. “Violence against any resident is unacceptable and I know Toronto Police work incredibly hard to bring those responsible to justice."

The carjacking came just a day after York Regional Police released a warning video about armed car thefts being on the rise in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area.
