Fan launches Leafs jersey onto the ice just 5 games into NHL season

Some Maple Leafs fans are already in midseason, sweater-chucking form after Toronto's third loss in five games to open the 2021-22 campaign. (Photo via Twitter)

Spectators have only been allowed back inside the friendly confines of Scotiabank Arena for a grand total of four Toronto Maple Leafs regular-season NHLgames so far, and we already have our first sweet, sweet jersey toss.

After a sluggish 5-3 loss to the San Jose Sharks on Friday, the Leafs boasted a pathetic 2-2-1 record including an absolutely disastrous 2-1-1 mark at home. With a measly 75-plus games remaining on the schedule and the team's playoff chances clearly in doubt, it's panic time for, well, at least one dude, who chucked his home blue Maple Leafs tarp onto the ice surface following the final horn of Friday's loss to the Sharks.

First off, 3/10 on the actual delivery and execution of the throw. Weak, uninspired, barely even made it over the glass and onto the ice. Buddy starts walking toward the glass right before the camera cuts out — presumably to ask for it back. Commit to the bit all the way through, man. This ranks near the bottom of all-time sweater tosses, for sure — staged or not. If you're going to chase some clout with this old move, you at least have to show some pride and put a little something behind it.

Gotta put a little oomph into it, like this 2015 beaut.

It can also never be overstated how much of a clown move this is — real fan douchebaggery at its finest. It's harmless stuff, of course, but just, why?

It's likely fake and probably smells real bad anyways, but in the off chance that it's real and doesn't, just donate it to a kid or a hospital or an elderly relative who will appreciate it or something instead of pulling this amateur-hour stuff.

But, at least fanbases from around the league had some fun with it:

One jersey toss in five games means we are on pace for nearly double-digit jersey tosses in Toronto this season. Will have to make sure with our metrics people — don't want to be floating any unconfirmed or incorrect stats out there — but this seems to have the makings of a potentially record-breaking year in this elusive category.
