NHL Halloween 2016: Grown men dress in costumes (Gallery)
One of the few delights throughout the long NHL season is the Halloween parties teams have and seeing our favorite NHLers get creative with their costumes.
We dug around the interwebs to find as many players in costume this year at their team’s Halloween celebrations and they did not disappoint.
Without further ado, enjoy the gallery of ghouls and goblins from what is NHL Halloween 2016.
Anaheim Ducks
Featuring: Korbinian Holzer as Borat, Nate Thompson as a member of the Chicago Cubs, and Jonathan Bernier as the physical representation of pop art/Roy Lichtenstein paintings.
Boston Bruins
Featuring: David Krejci as a shark (left or right, depending on perspective); David Pastrnak as a scarecrow; Zdeno Chara as a giraffe that might actually rival the size of an actual giraffe; Ryan Spooner, Frank Vatrano, Colin Miller and Joe Morrow as adorable Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; Matt Beleskey (we think?) as the big bad wolf? Or maybe a Bruin in an old lady’s closing? Jimmy Hayes as the Genie from Aladdin. Finally, the Turtles are back with Brad Marchand as Splinter and John-Michael Liles as Shredder’s henchman, Bebop.
Buffalo Sabres
Featuring: Jack Eichel and Sam Reinhart in showing some (pasty-white legs) in lederhosen. Zemgus Girgenson as the Black Power Ranger; and Matt Moulson as Danny from Grease, Zach Bogosian as everything we love about the 80s (fannypack!), and Kyle Okposo as Steve Harvey. Extra credit to Mrs. Okposo for dressing as Ms. Columbia.
Columbus Blue Jackets
Featuring: Alexander Wennberg and William ‘Wild Bill’ Karlsson as guys wearing inflatable costumes that look like they’re being carried. Cam Atkinson gets in on the inflatable fun as a pumpkin. Scott Hartnell dons his best furry costume as a bear.
Chicago Blackhawks
Featuring: ‘Deadly serious’ Jonathan Toews (who could really use David Pumpkins to make this all work.) Scott Darling and date as the dynamic figure skating tandem of Chaz Michael Michaels and Jimmy MacElroy from Blades of Glory. Artem Anisimov and Richard Pannik (we think) get in on the skeleton action with Toews. Artemi Panarin is the cutest little gangster we’ve ever seen. Vinnie Hinostroza, Ryan Hartman, Tyler Motte, and Nick Schmaltz represent the Channel 4 news team straight out of the classiest city in the world. Finally, Michal Kempny and Dennis Rasmussen recreate the epic tennis rivalry that is John McEnroe vs. Ivan Lendl.
Colorado Avalanche
Featuring: Matt Duchene and guest as Bugs Bunny and Lola from Space Jam; they’ve brought with them ‘Michael’s Secret Stuff’ and something tells us it’s not filled with apple juice. Calvin Pickard embraces Ken Bone from the second presidential debate. Props to Pickard for attempting to get Bone’s body shape correct.
Edmonton Oilers
Featuring: Patrick Maroon and date as Spike and Ice Box from the classic ‘Little Giants.’ Jesse Puljijarvi as Mr. Incredible and Iiro Parkinen as Pikachu. Jordan Eberle is Pokemaster Ash Ketchum and he’s probably happy he caught this version of Pikachu and not the Parkinen version. Zack Kassian as a ‘chubby baby.’ (HIS WORDS, NOT OURS!)
Florida Panthers
Featuring: One of favorite costumes of the lot: Jonathan Huberdeau as Elliott from the movie ‘E.T.’ with the namesake character right where he belongs. Jaromir Jagr dressed like a Pharaoh because his insides might already be preserved and he continues to keep playing. Jason Demers and guest played the power couple of our youth, Kermit and Miss Piggy. Aaron Ekblad picked up a common costume this year as Waldo from the book Where’s Waldo?
Minnesota Wild
Featuring: The Ghost-busting trio of Zack Dalpe, Matt Dumba, and Erik Haula, Chris Stewart as Cookie Monster (barfing up a man’s head), and Wanye Gretzky.
Montreal Canadiens
Featuring: Alexander Radulov as an out of place doctor; Andrei Markov as a ghostly king; Alex Galchenyuk as a handcuffed terrifying clown that will haunt your dreams; Alexei Emelin as an escaped inmate that gets the cute title of ‘Jail Bird;’ and Mikhail Sergachev as Heath Ledger’s version of the Joker from ‘The Dark Knight.’
Nashville Predators
Featuring: P.K. Subban in what is probably casual wear for him (or dressed up as Prince, you pick); Ryan Johansen as Ace Ventura; and Filip Forseberg whom we’re assuming is Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy. No word if Forseberg stayed true to character and only said ‘I am Groot’ the entire night.
New Jersey Devils
Featuring: Kyle Palmieri as Wolverine. Dude can grow a beard in like 10 minutes. Bonus points for the kitchen knives taped to his hands with fake blood on them. Sometimes you’ve just got to improvise.
New York Rangers
Featuring: Henrik Lundqvist as the least hansome version of Henrik Lundqvist we’ve ever seen (he’s the one in the mask); Mats Zuccarello as a figurine of Manchester United footballer Zlatan Ibrahimović; Mika Zibanejad (we think) as Jack Sparrow; and far and away the funniest of the group, Dylan McIlrath as Todd from the movie, Wedding Crashers. Chris Kreider and Josh Jooris as Eleven and Dustin from Stranger Things. Finally, Michael Grabner embraces his inner Game of Thrones nerd as Khal Drogo.
Ottawa Senators
Featuring: The man is a leader on and off the ice, Erik Karlsson as the Black Swan; Curtis Lazar, Chad Nehring and Ryan Rupert leave nothing to the imagination in their skintight costumes; Jean-Gabriel Pageau is a politically incorrect man chasing after a pinata; Codi Ceci as Nemo; Dion Phaneuf and Clarke MacArthur let their hair down; Chris Wideman and family embrace Hulk-a-mania and it is glorious; Andrew Hammond also gets in on the Hulk action with Phaneuf, MacArthur, and Wideman switches up to either Baba Boeoey or Borat.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Featuring: Kris Letang as Bootstrap Bill Turner from Pirates of the Caribbean; Chris Kunitz and wife as Frankenstein and his bride; Marc-Andre Fleury reveals what he looks like underneath his goaltending mask; Connor Sheary (Mario), Scott Wilson (Koopa), and Bryan Rust (Yoshi) embark on a little Mario Kart with friends; Brian Dumoulin as Lumiere from Beauty and the Beast; and Derrick Pouliot and date as Squints and Wendy Peffercorn from The Sandlot.
St. Louis Blues
Featuring: Joel Edmondson, Ty Rattie, and Robby Fabbri as officers from Reno 911 (thank goodness none of them went all the way with the Officer Dangle’s look); Jake Allen and Carter Hutton recreate two separate baseball moments as Ricky ‘Wild Thing’ Vaughn from Major League and the infamous Chicago Cubs fan, Steve Bartman.
Toronto Maple Leafs
Featuring: Peter Holland as Donald Trump and Auston Matthews as a much skinnier Ken Bone; Frankie Corrado and Frederik Andersen must shop at the same costume store as they both arrived in Waldo garb; Jake Gardiner is the title character from the 90’s Nicktoon, Hey Arnold!; William Nylander and Zach Hyman wear their Sunday’s best as we can only assume they’re playing 70s church-goers; Matt Martin and girlfriend, Sydney Esiason, recreate Suicide Squad’s version of the Joker and Harley Quinn; James van Riemsdyk goes for the more subtle Ace Ventura; Tyler Bozak embraces his inner Derek Zoolander giving his best Blue Steel; and Leo Komarov is an adorable monkey, but we would have loved to have seen his take on Seinfeld’s Uncle Leo.

Washington Capitals
Featuring: Tom Wilson and Andre Burakovsky as Dale and Brennan from the classic movie, Stepbrothers; John Carlson as a member of the SWAT team; T.J. Oshie and wife take on the pre-breakup Brangelina as Mr. & Mrs. Smith; Alexander Ovechkin escaped from jail; Dmitry Orlov and date bring out another version of Harley Quinn and the Joker; Nate Schmidt and Evgeni Kuznetsov left flight school early for the party; Matt Niskanen made a convincing tooth fairy; and Braden Holtby is the best bearded lady we’ve ever seen.
Winnipeg Jets
Featuring: The newest dynamic duo of Winnipeg (sorta), Nikolaj Ehlers as Batman and Patrik Laine as Robin, and Alex Burmistrov does his best spell as Harry Potter to turn the Jets fortunes around.
