NHL Fantasy Hockey Waiver Wire Forward Pickups January 14 - Dmitri Voronkov Continues to Excel for the Blue Jackets
On every game day this season, THN Fantasy will highlight players and goalies for fantasy managers to stream or roster for the rest of the season. The recommended players and goalies can be used in standard fantasy leagues or for daily fantasy games.
Justin Brazeau, RW, BOS @ TB (1% rostered)
Brazeau is being deployed in Boston's bottom-six, bouncing between the third and fourth line. While his production has taken a step back lately, he still has 10 goals and nine helpers with 70 hits in 43 games. When he is rolling, Boston deploys Brazeau on the power play, adding to his potential value on a heavy schedule in the NHL.
Mavrik Bourque, C, DAL @ TOR (1% rostered)
Bourque saw his three-game point streak end Sunday, but he has raised his game recently. A first-round pick, 30 overall in 2020, Bourque is centering Dallas' third line. Bourque, in his first full season in Big D, has settled in nicely to his role while only scratching the surface of what he should eventually produce.
Fabian Zetterlund, LW/RW, SJ @ DET (29% rostered)
Zetterlund ended a nine-game goal drought Friday. Despite those struggles, Zet still has 12 goals - with 16 assists, 81 hits and 45 blocked shots - in 45 games. He still is on pace for a new career-high in points, though he will need to avoid those large gaps in production. Zetterlund should benefit from skating next to Macklin Celebrini on San Jose's first line.
Kaapo Kakko, RW, SEA @ PIT (18% rostered)
Kakko, profiled Sunday, notched another assist in that contest. He is up to three goals and five helpers in 11 games for his new team. Kaako, the second overall pick behind Jack Hughes in 2019, struggled during his tenure in New York. A move to West Coast certainly has aided his game so far as he skates on the top line with Matty Beniers.
Kevin Hayes, C, PIT vs, SEA (0% rostered)
Yes, you read correctly, that is Hayes and two, ex-Rangers back-to-back. Hayes is benefitting from the absence of the sidelined Evgeni Malkin, scoring three goals in his last five games while also seeing power play ice time. When Malkin returns, feel free to jump ship, but deploy Hayes in the short term. The 32-year-old forward, who is with his sixth team, has contributed 10 points (five on the power play), 39 shots on net and a minus-14 rating over 28 appearances, mainly in a bottom-six role.
Pierre-Luc Dubois, C/LW, WSH vs, ANA (37% rostered)
PLD is scoreless in his last two games but still has dented the scoresheet in 14 of his last 19 contests, tallying four goals and 17 points. All but chased out of Los Angeles, in exchange for Darcy Kuemper, Dubois has ably slid into the second line center role for the Capitals. With seven goals and 26 assists in 43 appearances, PLD should easily exceed the 40 points he notched last season and could chase his career-high of 63 set in 2022-23 in Winnipeg.
Morgan Frost, C, PHI @ CLM (2% rostered)
Frost, centering the Flyers' top line, has lit the lamp in two straight games and the 25-year-old has notched six points -- three goals and three assists -- across his last eight appearances. His hot streak has bumped Frost's season totals to nine markers and 12 helpers in 39 contests. Frost's current roll puts his season-high of 46 points, set two years, as a possible long-range goal.
Dmitri Voronkov, LW, CLM vs. PHI (49% rostered)
Voronkov is dented the scoresheet in four straight games, notching four goals and a pair of helpers in that stretch. Through 34 contests, the former fourth round pick, 119 overall in 2019, sits just one tally shy of the 18 he posted last season in 75 appearances. A fixture on the first line opposite Kirill Marchenko, Voronkov has also added 13 assists, leaving him just five points shy of setting a new career-high.
Jesper Boqvist, C, FLA @ NJ (1% rostered)
Boqvist makes a nice deep option in leagues. He has posted four goals with a pair of assists his last seven games while bouncing up-and-down the Panthers' lineup. Signed to a one-year contract by the 'Cats, Boqvist is up to nine goals, eight assists, 43 shots on net, 91 hits and a minus-3 rating through 40 appearances.
Anders Lee, LW, NYI vs. OTT (48% rostered)
Lee, the Islanders' captain, continued his fine play, notching a pair of assists Saturday. Skating next to Brock Nelson and Mathew Barzal, Lee has six goals and four assists over his last nine outings. For the season, the 34-year-old winger is at 35 points (19 goals, 16 helpers), 130 shots, 60 hits, 16 PIM and a plus-11 rating across 42 appearances. Another 50-point season could be in the offering for Lee,
Matthew Coronato, RW, CGY @ STL (3% rostered)
Coronato broke a six-game goal drought Saturday and now has a tally and three assists in his last four contests. Each goal/assist/point creates a new career-best for the the 13 overall pick in 2021 who is in his second season with the Flames. Coronado is skating on the team's second line and his 36 games already exceed his total from his rookie campaign last season.
Dylan Holloway, STL vs. CGY (52% rostered)
Holloway just exceeded the 50% roster threshold for inclusion in this column, so I am taking some license by profiling him. He had two goals and six assists during a five-game point streak that ended Saturday as he continues to make the Blues smart for signing him to an offer sheet away from the Oilers. The 23-year-old now has 15 goals, 32 points, 106 shots, 89 hits and a plus-11 rating over 44 appearances this season.
Gustav Nyquist, NSH vs. LV (8% rostered)
Nyquist, brilliant in 2023-24, has not had the same level of success this season. He does have four points in his last five games, so maybe he is rounding into form. Nyquist achieved personal bests in 2023-24, generating 52 assists and 75 points in 81 games during his inaugural season with the Predators. This season, he has just seven goals and 10 assists in 41 assists despite top-six deployment.
Nick Bjugstad, C, UTAH vs. MTL (1% rostered)
Bjugstad turned back the clock last season for Arizona, potting 22 goals and 23 helpers in 76 games. Like Nyquist, 2024-25 has not been as kind to Bjugstad, as he has just four markers and seven apples in 34 contests. But it's possible that the former first-round pick 2010 for Florida has turned the corner as the calendar flipped to 2025, earning three assists over his first five games in January.
Reilly Smith, R, NYR @ COL (3% rostered)
Smith is off to a solid start to 2025, notching a goal and three assists his last six games. He has remained next to Mika Zibanajed on the Blueshirts' second line after a short stint on the third trio. If New York continues to get back into contention for a Wild Card spot, as they are 4-1-1 in their last six, Smith has a decent chance to remain with the club. If not, he is a trade deadline candidate.
Jonathan Drouin, LW/RW, COL vs, NYR (29% rostered)
Drouin, who returned New Year's Eve after missing 16 games, has not missed a beat since he rejoined the active lineup. He has notched a goal and five assists in the six contests he has played skating on a line with Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen. As long as the veteran winger remains deployed there, solid production should continue.
