NHL Fantasy Hockey Waiver Wire Forwards Pickups Jan. 16 - Feeding Frenzy For Sharks' Eklund
On every game day this season, THN Fantasy will highlight players and goalies for fantasy managers to stream or roster for the rest of the season. The recommended players and goalies can be used in standard fantasy leagues or for daily fantasy games.
Logan Cooley, C, UTA vs. NYR (47% rostered)
Josh Doan, LW/RW, UTA vs. NYR (2% rostered)
Cooley scored his 12th goal of the season and registered six shots in his previous game against the Habs to bring his season total to 37 points in 43 games. He's centering both L1 and PP1, and without Dylan Guenther on the second line, Utah's going to be leaning on their top line a lot.
In deeper leagues, don't forget about Doan. He was sent to the AHL earlier this season despite starting with the big club, and scored a power-play goal along with four shots in his previous game. He's playing with Barrett Hayton and Matias Maccelli on a low-upside second line, but there's value added with Doan's role on PP1.
Kiefer Sherwood, LW/RW, VAN vs. LA (42% rostered)
If you need hits, there's no one better in the league. The upside with Sherwood is his offense; he's played at least 17 minutes in three of his past four games and has been a fixture on PP2 for the past few games. Scoring on the Kings will be tough, but if anything Sherwood will rack up the hits.
William Eklund, LW/RW, SJ at CBJ (19% rostered)
Eklund has scored three goals in his past five games, and he's coming off a three-point game against the Wings. Other than Macklin Celebrini, he might have the highest offensive ceiling on the Sharks lineup. What I like about this matchup, though, is the Jackets tend to play in some really high-scoring games. They're allowing the second-most goals per game in the league.
Josh Norris, C, OTT vs. WSH (34% rostered)
Norris is carrying a three-game points streak into this game. He's a great multi-category fantasy player with 10 shots, 20 faceoff wins, 13 hits and four blocked shots during that span. Scoring on the Caps, especially if they start Logan Thompson, may be difficult, but Norris fills a ton of categories, making him one of the better high-ceiling options for Thursday.
Jonathan Drouin, LW/RW, COL vs. EDM (27% rostered)
Drouin's been quiet over the past two games but you watch him and it's not like he's floating. He's battling all over the ice and slated to skate on L1 and PP1 with Nathan MacKinnon once again. Drouin doesn't shoot the puck very often and doesn't hit or block shots, making him a boom-or-bust candidate.
Logan Stankoven, C/RW, DAL vs. MTL (20% rostered)
It feels like Stankoven's heating up. He scored two goals and three points in a 4-1 win against the Leafs, and he's been snakebit all season; his shooting percentage of 5.2 percent is far too low for a forward, not to mention a player of his caliber. With Roope Hintz out of the lineup, Stankoven may get more minutes than usual. If he has another good game, we'll have to start considering him as a hold for the rest of the season.
Adam Fantilli, C, CBJ vs. SJ (17% rostered)
I can't stress enough that Fantilli should be rostered in all leagues, even for the short-term. His assist Tuesday against the Flyers stretched his points streak to six games, and he's filled in very well for Sean Monahan on the top line. Monahan is expected to miss at least a couple weeks, so expect Fantilli's point production to continue.
Dawson Mercer, C/RW, NJ at TOR (9% rostered)
With news that Stefan Noesen will not be making the trip to Toronto, look for Mercer to step in on PP1 as he did last game. The versatile forward played 17:54 and finished with just one shot on goal, but if you're looking for a streaming option with some power play potential, Mercer would be a good choice. The Devils power play ranks third in the league.
Honorable mention:
Jonathan Huberdeau, C/LW, CGY at STL (43% rostered)
Tyler Toffoli, LW/RW, SJ at CBJ (38% rostered)
Pierre-Luc Dubois, C/LW, WSH at OTT (35% rostered)
Nino Niederreiter, LW/RW, WPG vs. SEA (24% rostered)
