Hurricanes welcome Leafs to town with David Ayres troll job

The Carolina Hurricanes are living rent-free in multiple provinces, it seems.

After destroying the Montreal Canadiens — both on the ice and online — last week in Jesperi Kotkaniemi's return to Quebec, the Hurricanes and their vaunted social media team turned their attention to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

If it wasn't bad enough that Frederik Andersen is starting his tenure in Carolina on a Vezina Trophy trajectory while Petr Mrazek sits on the shelf for the Maple Leafs, the Hurricanes added an extra layer to the goaltending torment, featuring David Ayres as part of their in-game entertainment before their meeting with Toronto on Monday night.

Ayres is, of course, the (current or former) Maple Leafs employee who scraped the ice for the Toronto Marlies, stopped pucks at select practices for the big team, and defeated the Leafs as a member of the Hurricanes when a series of injuries resulted in the use of an emergency backup goaltender almost two years ago.

The EBUG has achieved a measure of celebrity since that infamous night, having toured the late-night circuit and selling his story for movie adaptation. His gear lives in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

The question I always had was: how cool are the Leafs with having someone they have on payroll continuing to market one of the more catastrophic nights in the organization's recent memory? Is he really still taking in biweekly pay from the team that exists today as the butt of this joke?

I suppose the question still stands with the organization, licking its wounds now for different reasons, in the building Monday night.
