Canadiens prospect leaves game on stretcher after awkward fall

TD Place was completely silent on Wednesday night when Ottawa 67s winger and Montreal Canadiens prospect Vinzenz Rohrer laid motionless on the ice during the game against the Kingston Frontenacs in the Ontario Hockey League.

The 18-year-old forward, who was selected in the third round, 75th-overall by the Canadiens in the 2022 NHL Draft, was upended with a hip check by Frontenacs defenceman Thomas Budnick, and was thrown off balance as he fell to the ice in a vulnerable position. He landed awkwardly, with his head and neck hitting the ground first.

According to Jean-François Laplante of Le Droit, Rohrer then started convulsing as trainers rushed to his side. He was placed and mobilized on a stretcher and taken to a local hospital.

Moments after the scary scene, the 67s shared an encouraging update on Twitter, stating that Rohrer was awake and responsive, and had movement in all of his extremities. He is undergoing further evaluation at the hospital.

Ottawa announced on Thursday that Rohrer was released from the hospital late Wednesday night after undergoing a series of tests, and is resting at home.

Before the incident, Rohrer had scored the first goal of the game, giving his 67s the lead in the contest. Prior to Wednesday night’s action, Rohrer had put up 11 goals and 33 points in 27 games for Ottawa in the 2022-23 season.

The 67s would go on to blowout the Frontenacs in a 8-1 win.

Rohrer captained Austria at the 2023 World Junior Championship, registering three points in five games and scoring in Austria's relegation series against Latvia.
