Blackhawks reportedly eyeing Raptors executive Teresa Resch for open GM job

Could a crucial part of the Toronto Raptors front office switch sports entirely and join the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks?

The Chicago Blackhawks are continuing their search for a new general manager and their most recent candidate is a little outside the box.

According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Chicago is looking over at the management group that brought the Larry O’Brien Trophy north of the border for the first time, eyeing Raptors VP of Basketball Operations and Player Development, Teresa Resch.

Resch joined the Raptors back in 2013 and has been crucial in the 2019 NBA champions establishing one of the best front offices in the league. Even head coach Nick Nurse isn’t surprised that Resch is getting attention from other organizations in a completely different sport.

Resch was one of Masai Ujiri’s first hires when he took over in Toronto and her role has only grown since then.

This unorthodox hiring process of looking outside of the sport — for the NHL, anyways — has been a theme for the Blackhawks in their last few months of a GM search. After some reports, the team confirmed that they interviewed Chicago Cubs assistant GM Jeff Greenberg, after interviewing a slew of candidates that include Hurricanes assistant GM Eric Tulsky, veteran NHL executive Peter Chiarelli, and the Lightning’s Director of Hockey Operations, Mathieu Darche.

If hired, Resch would become the first female general manager in NHL history, and just the second in major sports after the Miami Marlins hired Kim Ng to become the first in 2020. This also comes after the Vancouver Canucks made a few landmark hires, bringing in player agent Émilie Castonguay and women’s hockey legend Cammi Granato as two assistant general managers, becoming just the second and third women executives in the NHL, after the Ducks hired Angela Gorgone in 1996.

There is no clear timeline for the Blackhawks to make a decision, but there is certainly an opportunity here to make a monumental hire for the embattled franchise.
