Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews has been named the 2021-22 Ted Lindsay Award winner as the NHL's most outstanding player as voted by fellow members of the NHLPA, beating out Connor McDavid and Roman Josi for the award.

Rocket Richard Trophy winner Matthews had the best goal-scoring season ever by a United States-born NHL player and in Maple Leafs franchise history with 60, becoming the first to hit that mark since Steven Stamkos did it in 2011-12. The former finished tied with the latter for sixth in league scoring this season with 106 points, ranked No. 1 in shots on goal with a whopping 348, while finishing fifth in game-winning goals (10), and tied for third in power-play goals with 16.

Matthews, a Hart Trophy finalist for the second consecutive campaign, helped Toronto qualify for the playoffs for the sixth straight year, while leading the Maple Leafs to the most wins (54) and points (115) in franchise history.

For the second consecutive season, McDavid led the NHL in points (123) while was also finishing first in power-play points with (10-34-44), second in assists (79), seventh in goals (44), and sixth in game-winning goals with nine.

McDavid, who has already won the Ted Lindsay Award three times in 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2020-21, has finished either first or second in NHL scoring each the last six seasons while finishing No. 1 in four of those. The 25-year old is also nominated for the Hart Trophy once again this season, an award he's already won twice.

Josi, meanwhile, finished second among d-men in goals (23) and led all NHL blueliners in scoring with 96 points, becoming the first defenseman to tally at least 90 points in a season since Ray Bourque recorded 91 with the Bruins during the 1993-94 campaign. Josi ranked first among defensemen in 2021-22 in power-play goals (11) and shots on goal (281) while suiting up in 80 games for the Predators.

Nashville's captain set the Predators' single-season points record while potting at least one point in 54 games in 2021-22, including 12 games with at least three points, according to NHL.com stats.
