NFL world reacts to Bears rookie Caleb Williams' preseason debut
Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams made his preseason debut Saturday against the Buffalo Bills, and it was an impressive start for the No. 1 overall pick.
Williams only played two series, but he already had some highlight-worthy plays on each drive while leading the Bears to points. On his first series, Williams completed 2-of-2 passes for 54 yards, including one play where he felt the pressure in the pocket and flipped the ball to running back D'Andre Swift for a 42-yard gain. It was the kind of improvisation that we've seen with him in college. Williams also had a 12-yard completion to receiver DJ Moore on third-and-12 to keep the chains moving early on in the drive, which ended in a Cairo Santos field goal.
On the next possession, Williams once again marched the Bears down to the red zone. He was 2-for-5 on the drive, but that included a couple of drops from tight end Cole Kmet and Moore. Williams once again showed why he was the No. 1 pick in the draft as he extended the play and threw a dart to Kmet for a 26-yard gain. He also had a 13-yard scramble to pick up a first down.
Williams finished the day completing 4-of-7 passes for 95 yards and a 101.8 passer rating, while leading Chicago to six points.
As you can imagine, there was plenty of reaction to Williams' preseason debut. Here's how the NFL world reacted:
Plenty of half-field leveled reads for CW. Some things happening fast for him, but the arm talent is obvious and the operation was clean. Good day. #Bears

I’m very pleased with Caleb Williams’ preseason debut. Looked calm, in control at the LOS & did a nice job of going through progressions.
For #Bears fans who aren’t familiar with Williams’ pocket awareness, welcome. This is why his college Time To Throw doesn’t worry me as much— Aaron Leming (@AaronLemingNFL) August 10, 2024
The Bears wanted to see how Caleb Williams would handle pressure in his preseason debut. Well, this will do. Extends the play and fires a dart to Cole Kmet. pic.twitter.com/gP14yWm084

Caleb Williams is the most obvious next great QB in the NFL, I really don’t know why people were overthinking him at all

2 great drives. Caleb Williams showed everything he is capable of.
Take a seat, 18. Solid first start.— Greg Braggs Jr. (@GBraggsJr23) August 10, 2024
Caleb Williams in two series and 18 plays: 4-of-7, 95 yards, 13-yard rush, 142 net yards of offense. He looked plenty comfortable and put talent on display. A strong preseason debut. pic.twitter.com/799DxstAdx

95 yards from Caleb Williams on four completions in the 1st quarter and none were cheapies. He’s going to clear 300 yards a game fairly consistently. We’ve never had that.

2 #Bears drives, both end in points. Caleb Williams hit a 3rd & long, hit a long completion, overcame a holding call, picked up a 1st with his legs, and took 0 sacks on 8 dropbacks.
Great pair of preseason drives for the rookie, I think his day is done. Really fun afternoon!— Robert Schmitz (@robertkschmitz) August 10, 2024
I know it’s preseason but it’s pretty gratifying seeing Caleb Williams look like Caleb MFing Williams at the NFL level. He’s so damn good.

Caleb Williams today…
Pocket throws/movement. Got to
the edges on boot (which should be a heavy offensive tendency for Chicago). Accuracy on the run. Playmaking instincts.
Small sample size (only two drives) — but we saw a lot of positives here. #Bears— Matt Bowen (@MattBowen41) August 10, 2024
UNREAL!🤯🤯🤯 #Bears QB Caleb Williams makes one of the wildest plays you’ll see this year and it’s not even week one.
Chicago passed on Mahomes once, they wouldn’t let it happen again with Williams. 👏👏👏pic.twitter.com/3lmLZYu5bw— NFC North News (@NFCNorthNewss) August 10, 2024
This Caleb Williams kid might be pretty good at football...
Ridiculous amount of juice on that throw rolling right. Bears fans, you got your guy!#NFL #Bears #BroItsFootball https://t.co/4XMSYM8cwX— Bro, it’s football. (@BroItsFootball) August 10, 2024
