NFL world reacts to Bears hiring Declan Doyle as offensive coordinator
The Chicago Bears’ coaching staff is starting to take shape as the team has reportedly hired both their offensive and defensive coordinators. After it was announced Chicago was hiring former Saints head coach Dennis Allen as their defensive coordinator, news broke that the Bears are hiring Declan Doyle as their offensive coordinator under Ben Johnson.
Most recently, Doyle, 28, spent the 2024 season as the Denver Broncos tight ends coach and is considered to be one of the young rising coaches in football. Interestingly enough, both Allen and Doyle had coached with current Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell while the three of them were on the Saints coaching staff in New Orleans.
As you can imagine, there was plenty of reaction to a somewhat surprising hire. There are plenty of Bears fans nervous about such a young coordinator, but the fact that he's highly-regarded by Sean Payton certainly eases the nerves a tad.

Don't know much about him if I'm being honest, but Ben Johnson is calling the plays anyways so there's opportunities to take chances to develop these young coaches https://t.co/5Xma13JjeN

Not sure how I feel about this one. I'd rather have a more veteran coordinator in there. But I guess we'll see. https://t.co/lcl65oG3cB

I believe this is the first coordinator-level coach younger than me. We’re entering a dark era. https://t.co/qDyErlsYL2

Had him in my top 3 most likely. This is a big step and a huge youth movement for #DaBears
Clearly there is a lot of Sean Payton in Ben Johnson https://t.co/gGbnGYBcAE— Mason West (@WestSportsPT) January 27, 2025
We are finally in the “he played Madden online” era of offensive coordinators and I’m here for it https://t.co/njgnW1sdxF

This is super cool to see. I imagine it takes a lot of strength and conditioning to rise to a point like this so quickly.
For more info search up “Doyle strength and conditioning coach” for more info on Declan and his family. https://t.co/vjIw9sHniR— Carter Donnick (@CDonnick1) January 27, 2025
This is an interesting move…but excited to see what he brings to the coaching staff.
ONLY 28 YEARS OLD!!!! https://t.co/47M0ZXE2k8— KIEQ ON THE MIC: A Chicago Bears Podcast (@KeiotaQ) January 27, 2025
Sean Payton clearly likes him bc he brought him over from the saints and gave him a promotion and he knows what he’s doing when it comes to his staff so I like this hire https://t.co/ys6eFDtNB7

Oh this is interesting
Don’t know anything about him but 28 years old is crazy https://t.co/bu2MUceN8k— Rick Hahn’s Burner (@RickHahnBurner) January 27, 2025
I bet Ben Johnson sees a lot of himself in Declan Doyle. Ben was a tight ends coach multiple times for moving up the ranks and -- like Doyle -- learned under some really good coaching minds. https://t.co/l2Ju7ysyBP

Took me about 5 mins to figure this out
Sean Mcvay was an offensive assist for a years
Become a TE coach for a few years
Around 27 & 28 became the OC for WAS
The Bears have the next Mcvay in house https://t.co/bkwyk172gJ— Eliott71 (@Eliott711) January 27, 2025
Between this and Campbell trying to hire from Denver, the influence of Sean Payton on Ben Johnson’s offense is pretty clear.
It’s been compared to Shanahan, but it’s Payton. https://t.co/ZKPGJt2eJI— Max Toscano (@maxtoscano1) January 27, 2025
I'm intrigued. He's from the Sean Payton tree, so it works for me. https://t.co/Qs7oYQn9al

One of the brightest minds in the game! Congratulations!! @CoachDDoyle https://t.co/ZNu2VxSZs0

Marcedes Lewis about to be 12 years older than his OC. https://t.co/3GiA9RxS7v

I don't really know how to feel about this but I guess I feel uninspired. He has a short history of coaching but his short track record doesn't show anything promising. https://t.co/LzDds2snP5

Ben Johnson had to have seen something in the guy to bring in a 28-year old OC as a first time head coach.
Not a big name hire but I like it considering we got Dennis Allen at DC https://t.co/9GZ05HkchU— Michael Valenzano (@mvalenzano2202) January 27, 2025
