NFL Star Tyreek Hill Mimics Being Handcuffed After Touchdown Catch, Agent 'Very Troubled' by Pre-Game Traffic Stop
The Dolphins wide receiver nodded to his Sept. 8 detainment while celebrating a 80-yard touchdown catch
Just hours after he was detained by police, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill appeared to be in good spirits.
During the Dolphins’ season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, Sept. 8, the NFL star, 30, earned a touchdown with an 80-yard pass, which he then marked with an unusual end-zone celebration: pretending to be handcuffed.
Along with teammate Jaylen Waddle, who pretended to be a police officer cuffing him, Hill walked along the wall of fans in the end zone with his hands behind his back, mimicking the situation he had experienced earlier that morning.
The atypical end-zone celebration came in the third quarter of the home game, which the Miami team went on to win 20-17 at the Dolphins' Hard Rock Stadium — a block from where Hill was detained earlier in the day.
Fans worried that the star receiver would not be able to play in the matchup after various videos of his roadside detainment — which showed Hill lying face-down on the ground, handcuffed and surrounded by four Miami-Dade police officers — surfaced on social media.
But shortly after, the team stated that though Hill was “briefly detained by police” after being “pulled over for a traffic incident about one block from the stadium,” he had been released and would join his teammates on the field later in the day.
Speaking with ESPN after the incident on Sunday morning, Hill's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said, “How things escalated into the situation that they were in, in handcuffs and being held on the ground with police, is mind-boggling to me. I’m deeply concerned by that. Very troubled.”
“We will be looking into it,” Rosenhaus continued. “We will be investigating this. We will look out for Tyreek, but I’m not going to make any allegations at this time. The most important thing is Tyreek is OK physically.”
“Mentally,” however, the wide receiver “was very distraught about what happened,” the agent added.
