NFL sends condolences following the 'tragic and senseless death' of Tyre Nichols

The sports community is reeling, like many Americans across the country, over the death of Tyre Nichols at the hands of police following a traffic stop in Memphis.

Memphis Grizzles coach Taylor Jenkins called the loss of Nichols "devastating." A moment of silence was held before Friday's Grizzlies-Timberwolves matchup in Minnesota. On Saturday, the National Football League sent condolences.

“The NFL mourns the tragic and senseless death of Tyre Nichols, and we send our condolences to his loved ones and the Memphis community,” the statement read. “We remain deeply committed to combatting the injustices and inequities that plague our society and will continue to work with our social justice partners to support our communities and fight for change.”

On Friday, Memphis police released body camera footage and video from street cameras of the Jan. 7 police interaction that led to Nichols' death. Five Memphis police officers have been fired and charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault-acting in concert, aggravated kidnapping, two counts of official misconduct and one count of official oppression related to Nichols' death.

It's not clear if the NFL will hold a moment of silence for Nichols ahead of Sunday's NFC title game between the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers or during the AFC championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals.
