NFL Hall of Famer criticizes Dallas Cowboys for passing on Derrick Henry
The Dallas Cowboys lost their second game in a row, falling to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, thanks in part to a lethal rushing attack spearheaded by Derrick Henry’s 151 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
After the game, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the team couldn’t have afforded the two-year $16 million deal Henry received from Baltimore.
On First Take Shannon Sharpe pushed back against those claims saying the Cowboys should’ve at least contacted Henry.
“The better question I have is did you even inquire? How do you know if you did not show any interest in Derrick Henry? Derrick Henry lives in Dallas,” said Sharpe, “You mean to tell me if you offer Derrick Henry $6 million, $6.5 million and he gets an opportunity to stay home, there’s a chance he takes that deal cause $8 million in Baltimore is the equivalent of $6.5 million cause there’s no state income tax.”
Sharpe blamed Jones’ ego for the Cowboys passing on Henry. Stephen A. Smith said Jones should’ve fired Mike McCarthy to bring in Bill Belichick in the offseason, but Sharpe said Jones’s ego wouldn’t allow Belichick to thrive in Dallas.
“At the end of the day, it comes down to Jerry’s ego. Jerry wants everything his way,” said Sharpe, “If coach Belichick comes in and turns this thing around you do realize Jerry is not getting any credit and that will drive him crazy.”
The Cowboys will have a chance to prove their detractors wrong when they play the New York Giants at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday at MetLife Stadium.
