NFC championship: Todd Gurley drop gives Saints easy interception

The Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints finished the regular season with the second- and third-most points in the NFL, so going into their NFC championship matchup it was easy to believe it would be a high-scoring afternoon.

The Saints’ first possession stalled just inside the red zone, with Will Lutz giving New Orleans an early 3-0 with a 37-yard field goal.

When the Rams got their first crack on offense, things didn’t exactly go as planned.

First, Los Angeles defensive back Marqui Christian was flagged for a block in the back during teammate JoJo Natson’s kickoff return, pushing the Rams back to their own 10.

Then on their third snap, Jared Goff threw for Todd Gurley over the middle. Normally sure-handed, the ball went off Gurley’s hands and popped up in the air. Saints linebacker Demario Davis was there for the interception, quickly tackled by Gurley, who wrapped up his ankles.

It was the first interception for Goff in 123 pass attempts, and the Rams’ first turnover in 211 snaps, spanning three games.

Despite the great field position, New Orleans came away with another field goal off the turnover.
