Newcastle United have completed the signing of Northern Ireland international midfielder Rachel Furness on a free transfer.

WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from The Magpies this afternoon.

Furness joins Newcastle United after leaving former club Bristol City earlier this summer.

The 36-year-old has enjoyed a long career which has seen her represent nine different clubs. After starting out at Chester-le-Street, Furness went on to play for Sunderland and Newcastle United before the player went overseas where she represented Icelandic club Grindavik. Upon her return to the UK, Furness re-joined Sunderland before having spells with Lincoln Ladies, Reading, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Bristol City.

Furness was a Barclays Women’s Championship winner with both Liverpool and Bristol City and she will now be hoping to repeat the feat again with Newcastle United.

After securing her Newcastle United return, Furness said “To sign for a club I have supported my whole life – coming back home to the North East – is a very proud moment for me. Anyone that knows me knows I bleed black and white.

“I have watched from afar over the years and the ambitions of the club on and off the pitch are something I can’t wait to be a part of. I’m excited to meet the team and bring my experience to an already very talented squad.”

Furness becomes Newcastle United’s sixth summer signing.
