Jets QB Zach Wilson works out after knee surgery, ‘it’s possible’ he could play vs. Ravens

New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson returned to the field on Monday for his first workout since he underwent arthroscopic knee surgery last month, raising hope that he could be ready for their season opener on Sunday.

Wilson first went down with a bone bruise and a torn meniscus in a preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Aug. 12. He underwent surgery a few days later, which was “deemed a success” and found no additional damage in his knee.

The team never officially ruled him out, but backup Joe Flacco has been the likely starter for Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens at MetLifeStadium. Jets coach Robert Saleh said he expected to have a firm answer later this week, and teased that “it’s possible” Wilson could play.

“Looked good, felt good,” Saleh said Monday of Wilson’s workout, via ESPN.

“We’re going to see how the knee responds today and tomorrow and we’ll have an answer for everybody on Wednesday.”

Wilson, the former No. 2 overall pick, threw for 2,334 yards, nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 55.6% of his passes during his rookie season. He played in just 13 games while dealing with a PCL sprain in his knee.

Whether Flacco gets to face his former team on Sunday or not, Saleh said there’s no plans to hold Wilson back whatsoever. Whenever he’s ready to go, he’ll be back out there.

"Eventually, whether it's this week or next week, it's going to be the same story: He has to get back in there," Saleh said, via ESPN. "You just have to rip the Band-Aid off when he's ready to play. When he's healthy and he feels good, he's going to play football."
