Gary Neville has issued a damning verdict of the state of two Manchester United players’ decline in form.

Casemiro and Christian Eriksen were awarded rare starts by Ruben Amorim for last night’s clash with Newcastle United, and, to nobody’s surprise, the ageing duo were torn apart by the visitors.

Both lost possession 14 times each, while the Dane was the only one to make a key pass in his 91 minutes played.

Prior to the contest, it was expected that they’d start due to the absences of suspended duo Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte. Now that the players have served their one-match bans, it’s highly unlikely you’ll see Eriksen and Casemiro start a game alongside one another in midfield in the second half of the term.

It also remains to be seen how much Eriksen will feature as he enters the final six months of his deal at Old Trafford, after which he’ll pull the curtains on his United career after three seasons and leave as a free agent.

As for his Brazilian counterpart, he’s contracted to the club until 2026 and will continue pocketing an eye-watering £350,000 each week until he’s either sold or released.

Reacting to the pair’s showing on Monday Night Football’s analysis, Neville told the panel: “Casemiro and Eriksen in midfield are like mannequins. Little one-two around them, it’s so easy.”

“They’ve been two fabulous players throughout their careers, but the last thing either of them wants to see is the other next to them. All you want around you is legs. They shouldn’t be playing a game together in the Premier League. They really shouldn’t.”

Next up for Amorim and his men is a trip to face league leaders Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday
