Netherlands EURO 2024 Star Getting Closer To Extending Inter Milan Contract

Wingback Denzel Dumfries is getting closer and closer to extending his contract with reigning Italian champions Inter Milan.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper report that the player’s desire is decisive.

This summer was always going to carry a fair bit of uncertainty as far as Dumfries’s future at Inter.

The reason for this is the Dutchman’s contract situation with the Italian champions.

Dumfries signed for Inter from PSV in the summer of 2021. He signed a four-year deal.

And the 28-year-old is still on that same contract – which expires at the end of next June.

Therefore, Inter’s dilemma is fairly clear. If they keep Dumfries for next season without extending his contract, they would risk losing him on a free transfer next summer, as they had Milan Skriniar.

Accordingly, the Nerazzurri have been working to tie Dumfries down on a new deal.

And if the Dutchman does not sign a new contract, Inter would reportedly aim to sell him this summer.

Denzel Dumfries Getting Closer To New Inter Milan Contract

The talks between Inter and Dumfries have been going on for a few months.

And for a long time, it has looked as though the parties would not be able to reach an agreement.

The reason is that Dumfries’s wage demands are considerably higher than what Inter have been offering.

The Nerazzurri have put 4 million net per season on the table in terms of wages. Dumfries has asked for 5 million net per season.

And in talks over the first half of 2024, it has seemed as though that gap would be unbridgeable.

Therefore, it has looked as though Dumfries would be on his way out this summer.

Aston Villa reportedly see the former PSV wingback as a target.

However, the Gazzetta report, the situation has changed due to the desire of Dumfries himself.

The Dutchman is happy at Inter, and wants to stay. Therefore, he will instruct his agents to try and find an agreement with the Nerazzurri.

Even though Inter are not going to significantly increase their offer, Dumfries appears willing to accept it.

At the moment, Dumfries is in action at the Euros with the Netherlands. However, once he wraps up at the tournament, contract talks with Inter could accelerate rapidly.
