Alessandro Nesta wants to use the same approach as Carlo Ancelotti, Sven-Göran Eriksson and Zdenek Zeman at Monza: ‘It’s the chance of my life.’

The former Italy defender was unveiled as the new Monza boss on Tuesday, July 9. It’s not a random date, as revealed by Adriano Galliani, who picked it because it’s the anniversary of Nesta’s World Cup victory with Italy’s national team.

“It’s the first time I have taken charge of a Serie A club as a coach. I’ve worked hard to be here and hope to be prepared. Working with Galliani is a pleasure and a responsibility, and the stadium is very different from what I remembered,” said Nesta as quoted by TMW.

Galliani signed Nesta at Milan in 2002.

“We were involved in a different unveiling press conference 20 years ago,” said the ex-defender.

“We won and lost a lot. We fell down, but we always got up again. It was a fantastic path. It’s strange to reunite after 20 years. For now, he’s had no requests.

“It is an advantage to be a former footballer, but you’ll never grow if you don’t study and try something new. I am very enthusiastic, and Monza is the chance of my life. I called Palladino and he was very nice. He worked well here and I know that it will be hard after him. He did so well that it will be difficult.”

Has he chosen the system already?

“I think the team gave their best with a 3-5-2 system, but the first thing I’ll do with my staff is try to understand where every player can give his best. There is a nice mix,” Nesta replied.

The new Monza coach hasn’t talked about Daniel Maldini with his father Paolo. The promising Italian midfielder would love to return to Monza in the summer.

“I heard Paolo last month, but we didn’t talk about it. I asked him something about Monza, but he is the father. Agents and directors do a different job.”

Does Nesta have any role model for his coaching career?

“Not in tactical terms. As for the players’ management, I try to get inspiration from Ancelotti, Eriksson and Zeman,” he replied.

“They are all coaches who got the best out of me. I’ve learned from these coaches, and I hope to use the same approach here.

“We’ll continue building up from the back, but we must not exaggerate anything. Players must not be put in difficult situations. We build up from the back because we must be efficient. If it’s not the case, we won’t do it.”
