Nelson Sends Islanders Past Hurricanes 3-2 in OT; DeAngelo, Rantanen & Hall Make Debuts
ELMONT NY -- On a night that featured three new-team debuts, including Taylor Hall, Mikko Rantanen and Tony DeAngelo, the New York Islanders found a way to come back and defeat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 in overtime on a goal by Brock Nelson.
The game did not start well for the Islanders, as defenseman, Ryan Pulock went down only 15 seconds into the first and would not return.

5:18 into the game, Isaiah George was beaten by Jack Roslovic wide, and then Roslovic fired a puck past Isles goalie Marcus Hogberg to give 'Canes a 1-0 lead.

Just over a minute later at 6:30, Sebastian Aho's pass bounced off of George's leg and behind Hogberg to give Carolina a 2-0 lead.

The Islanders would turn the tide however before it got too late.
With 4:09 remaining in the first, Jasper Kotkaniemi and J.P. Pageau dropped the gloves after getting tangled up, and each got five minutes for fighting, but Kotkaniemi got an additional two minutes for roughing giving the Islanders a power play.
With only two seconds remaining in the power play, Alexander Romanov made it 2-1, scoring his first goal of the season, coming from Casey Cizikas and Adam Pelech -- cutting Carolina's lead in half.

After one period, the Hurricanes led 2-1, while the Islanders held a 10-9 shot advantage.
1:05 into the second period, Anthony Duclair was called for roughing Jalen Chatfield, however the Isles killed the ensuing power play.
At 10:55 Shayne Gostisbehere was called for hooking Simon Holmstrom. On the power play DeAngelo found Bo Horvat for a sensational opportunity, but goalie, Pyotr Kochetkov made a diving poke-check to keep the score at 2-1.
With 25 seconds remaining in the period Aho high-sticked Horvat in the face, and the Islanders went top the power play -- but could not score again.
After two periods the Isles still trailed by one goal, however owned a 19-17 shot advantage.

The third opened with the Hurricanes killing the final 1:35 of the penalty.
Then, at 6:26 the captain, Anders Lee tucked in a Horvat rebound and scored his 21st goal of the season. Romanov also got an assist.

The clubs exchanged chances throughout the remainder of the third period, but tied at two apiece, they moved to overtime.
Heading to overtime, Islanders goalie, Hogberg was surprisingly replaced by Ilya Sorokin. Hogberg sustained an upper body injury -- coach Patrick Roy later commented.
In overtime, Brock Nelson scooped up a loose puck and found himself with Kyle Palmieri on a 2-on-1 break. Nelson looked to pass, but fired home the winner, giving the Islanders a 3-2 OT win.

The Islanders skate again at UBS Arena on Tuesday when they host the Colorado Avalanche at 7:30 PM.
