Nelly Korda wraps up historic 2024 season alongside her dad at PNC Championship
Moments after Nelly Korda wrapped up her second career major title, she leapt into her father Petr's arms in a moment of pure joy. She'd done it. Under a mountain of pressure and expectations, Korda won her fifth consecutive title of the season last April at the Chevron Championship.
Any parent would be proud, of course, but few could appreciate the feat quite like Petr, a Grand Slam champion in his own right. It marked the first time that Petr had been onsite to watch Nelly win a major. Afterwards, the family and team gathered in the clubhouse at The Club at Carlton Woods to celebrate.
"Finally relaxed," said Petr of the mood.
While the LPGA's official season ended a month ago, this week's PNC Championship is the final event on Nelly's schedule, and it centers on what she values most in life: family.
This marks the fourth time the Kordas have appeared in the PNC, which features 20 teams made up of 11 former World No. 1s and 11 World Golf Hall of Fame members. Annika Sorenstam's son Will, 13, is the youngest in the field while 89-year-old Gary Player is the eldest.
"It's the highlight of his year," noted Nelly, who's coming off an historic seven-win season on the LPGA.
It's rarely quiet for the Korda fam. Brother Sebastian flies out for the Australian Open on Christmas Eve, which means the whole family will be together for one day, Dec. 23, before at least one of them gets back to work.
Petr and his wife Regina – a former Olympian who rose to No. 26 in the world before a knee injury forced her into retirement – never pushed their children into tennis. In golf, they found something they could all do together.
"We skied in the winters," said Nelly. "I figure skated. I did gymnastics. We kind of dabbled a little bit in everything."
While it's Petr inside the ropes this week, he's quick to point to Regina as the backbone of the family."Unfortunately, everybody talks about me," said Petr. "They're forgetting there is always the most important ornament on the Christmas tree, and that's the angel, that's my wife.
"It's a combined effort. She was an important time for Jess while she was growing up and I was still playing. I believe she's the leading force in our family. We try to follow her lead. It doesn't look like it, but it's true."
Jessica Korda, a six-time winner on the LPGA, is on maternity leave and has given her parents another title: grandparent. She's setting her sights on returning to the tour in 2026.
"They were truly really involved in everything that we did growing up," said Nelly. "We were never alone. Every single lesson that we had, they were right there ... they committed their whole life to us, so we're very grateful."
