NCAA Providence College Commit Signs With Owen Sound Attack

The NCAA commits are starting to make their way to the best major junior development hockey league in the world, and the Owen Sound Attack benefit from the new NCAA rule change.

Not long after the NCAA officially announced the vote was official and OHL players could play while holding an NCAA commitment, the Owen Sound Attack announced they had signed Mason Roy to an OHL Standard Player Development and Education agreement.

Roy was selected 42nd overall in the second round of the 2024 OHL Priority Selection. He's committed to playing for Providence College starting in 2027-28 and would've nullified his D1 scholarship if he had suited up in one OHL game before yesterday.

“This is something we have been hoping for since the draft in April. Mason is a smooth skating defender with good hockey sense and size," said Attack GM Dale DeGray on the signing of his new young defender.

The 6-foot-2, 178-pound left-shot defenseman has been playing Jr. A hockey with the Burlington Cougars in the OJHL, recording one goal and five points in 19 games.

Owen Sound hosts the red-hot Kitchener Rangers Saturday night where Roy is expected to make his OHL debut. He will wear number three for the Attack.

According to Greg Cowan of the Owen Sound Sun Times, DeGray said Roy will be a call-up player (AP) this season. As such, he can play 10 games in the OHL before the Owen Sound Attack needs to use one of their player cards to keep him with the team. The Attack has until Jan. 10 to make that decision.

His addition to the Attack lineup could not have come at a better time, as the team is currently without their captain, Anaheim Ducks prospect Konnor Smith, and recently acquired overager Alec Leonard on defense.
