NC State football faces Dave Doeren’s former team. How to watch or stream the game
Two teams will take the field on Saturday afternoon at Carter-Finley Stadium, each entering the game looking to get back on track after stunning losses in Week 4.
N.C. State (2-2, 0-1 ACC) wants to forget about its collapse at Clemson, where it gave up 28 first-quarter points and ended with a 59-35 loss. Northern Illinois (2-1, 0-1 Mid-America) also wants to forget how it blew a 14-3 halftime lead to drop its conference opener against Buffalo, 23-20, in overtime.
Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren led NIU for two seasons in 2011 and 2012, prior to coming to N.C. State for the 2013 season. It was his first head coaching job after spending 20 years as an assistant or coordinator. He and Huskies coach Thomas Hammock both shared similar statements this week, saying this week is about battling through tough times.
Doeren said on Monday the coaching staff hasn’t gotten the players to execute plays at a high level, but he believes the team can move forward.
“I do believe in the grit of this university, in the grit of our staff; the discipline and the toughness that it takes to go through a humiliating loss,” Doeren said. “It is what it is. You get up and you fight. That’s what you have: A coach that’s going to fight. As long as I’m breathing, I’m going to fight my ass off, and I’m going to get these kids to do the same.”
Hammock said his team took accountability and responded well since the loss.
“We had an unbelievable high winning at Notre Dame and then an unbelievable low losing last week. You can only grow when you’re uncomfortable,” Hammock added. “I think I’ve seen a lot of growth this week from our team; things we need to do better, how we need to handle situations better. I think that’s only going to help us as we move forward.”
N.C. State’s defense will be on full display after Doeren told reporters the staff planned to reevaluate every position and the team lost defensive lineman Red Hibbler this week. Meanwhile, the Huskies look to play competitively — starting at the defensive and offensive lines — and cause chaos at the Carter.
