NBA pre-agency: Ranking all the extension candidates in the league
With free agency mostly over, most of the transactions left to be done are trades and extensions. There are still a handful of players on rookie-scale contracts who are eligible to extend before the start of the regular season. We’ve already seen several of the top players from the 2020 draft class with new deals like Anthony Edwards, Tyrese Haliburton, and LaMelo Ball.
We also still have many veterans that are likely to extend but haven’t become eligible yet. We’ve already seen some massive extensions like Jaylen Brown‘s record-breaking five-year, $304 million supermax contract, and Domantas Sabonis‘ five-year, $217 million renegotiation and extension.
Here is a ranking of every current extension-eligible player, the maximum amounts they can get, and the probability of each player getting extended.
Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee Bucks)
Maximum possible contract: three years, projected at $170 million
Eligibility: September 22, 2023 through the day before the start of the regular season
Free agency age: 30 years old in 2026
Career earnings: $190.5 million
Agent: Alex Saratsis and Jeff Austin
Probability of extending: Weak
Giannis Antetokounmpo is more likely to accept an extension next season when he could add up to four years.
Anthony Davis (Los Angeles Lakers)
Maximum possible contract: three years, projected at $170 million
Eligibility: August 4, 2023 through the day before the start of the regular season
Free agency age: 32 years old in 2025
Career earnings: $228 million
Agent: Rich Paul
Probability of extending: Strong
Anthony Davis could look to capitalize off his best and healthiest season in years with a three year deal projected at $170 million.
Kawhi Leonard (Los Angeles Clippers)
Maximum possible contract: four years, projected at $224 million
Eligibility: July 12, 2023 through June 30, 2024
Free agency age: 34 years old in 2025
Career earnings: $233.5 million
Agent: Mitch Frankel
Probability of extending: Decent
Kawhi Leonard has been extension-eligible for a couple of weeks, but the Clippers are reportedly in no rush to get a deal done.
Donovan Mitchell (Cleveland Cavaliers)
Maximum possible contract: two years, projected at $98 million
Eligibility: July 7, 2023 through the day before the start of the regular season
Free agency age: 28 years old in 2025
Career earnings: $73.5 million
Agent: Austin Brown and Ty Sullivan
Probability of extending: Weak
Donovan Mitchell is no longer eligible for the supermax after being traded to Cleveland. He seems more likely to re-up his next contract later when he can add more years.
Paul George (Los Angeles Clippers)
Maximum possible contract: four years, projected at $224 million
Eligibility: September 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024
Free agency age: 35 years old in 2025
Career earnings: $262 million
Agent: Aaron Mintz
Probability of extending: Decent
Paul George is eligible for a lucrative extension but he has had his fair share of injuries. It’s unclear where the Clippers stand on extending him if they aren’t prioritizing a Kawhi Leonard extension either.
Jamal Murray (Denver Nuggets)
Maximum possible contract: three years, $143.6 million
Eligibility: July 6, 2023 through the day before the start of the regular season
Free agency age: 28 years old in 2025
Career earnings: $103 million
Agent: Mike George and Jeff Schwartz

Maximum possible contract: three years, projected at $145.7 million
Eligibility: July 6, 2023 through the day before the start of the regular season
Free agency age: 27 years old in 2025
Career earnings: $112 million

Eligibility: July 8, 2023 through the day before the start of the regular season
Free agency age: 28 years old in 2026

Eligibility: July 6, 2023 through June 30, 2024
Free agency age: 30 years old in 2024
Career earnings: $105.5 million
Agent: Todd Ramasar
Probability of extending: Decent
Pascal Siakam could bypass an extension now since he still has one more season left of supermax eligibility. He could be on the move, however, since he was reportedly in trade rumors last month.
Bam Adebayo (Miami Heat)
Maximum possible contract: two years, projected at $98 million
Eligibility: July 14, 2023 through the day before the start of the regular season
Free agency age: 29 years old in 2026
Career earnings: $72.5 million
Agent: Alex Saratsis

Bam Adebayo could extend but it would make more sense if he did in a future season so he could tack on more years.
Tyrese Maxey (Philadelphia 76ers)
Maximum possible contract: five years, $207 million
Eligibility: July 6, 2023 through the day before the start of the regular season
Free agency age: 23 years old in 2024

Eligibility: October 1, 2023 through the day before the start of the regular season

Eligibility: August 6, 2023 through the day before the start of the regular season
Free agency age: 28 years old in 2025
Career earnings: $52.5 million
Agent: Michael Lelchitski
Probability of extending: Weak
Lauri Markkanen’s maximum extension increased by $11.7 million with the increase extension limits, but he seems more likely to wait until free agency to secure his next deal. He will also be a prime renegotiation candidate with Utah’s cap space next summer.
OG Anunoby (Toronto Raptors)
Maximum possible contract: four years, $116.9 million
Eligibility: October 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024
Free agency age: 27 years old in 2025

Free agency age: 35 years old in 2024

Eligibility: July 6, 2023 through the day before the start of the regular season
Free agency age: 23 years old in 2025

Maximum possible contract: three years, $101 million
Eligibility: August 13, 2023 through the day before the start of the regular season
Free agency age: 31 years old in 2025

Eligibility: October 1, 2023 through the day before the start of the regular season
Free agency age: 31 years old in 2025

Eligibility: July 6, 2023 through June 30, 2024
Free agency age: 34 years old in 2024

Malcolm Brogdon (Boston Celtics)
Maximum possible contract: three years, $102 million
Eligibility: October 1, 2023 through the day before the start of the regular season
Free agency age: 32 years old in 2025
Career earnings: $89 million
Agent: Austin Brown and Ty Sullivan
Probability of extending: Weak
Malcolm Brogdon had a strong season with the Celtics, but they will probably hold off on an extension to keep him trade eligible. An extension seems extremely unlikely now after they agreed to trade him to the Clippers in a deal that fell through.
Devin Vassell (San Antonio Spurs)
Maximum possible contract: five years, $207 million
Eligibility: July 6, 2023 through the day before the start of the regular season
Free agency age: 24 years old in 2024

Spencer Dinwiddie (Brooklyn Nets)
Maximum possible contract: four years, $118.3 million
Eligibility: July 6, 2023 through June 30, 2024
Free agency age: 31 years old in 2024

Eligibility: July 6, 2023 through the day before the start of the regular season
Free agency age: 40 years old in 2025
Career earnings: $360 million
Agent: Steven Heumann and Ty Sullivan
Probability of extending: Weak
The Warriors may be interested in extending Chris Paul, but that would require guaranteeing his $30 million salary for 2023-24. His future in Golden State past this season likely requires them waiving him and then re-signing him on a cheaper deal.
Onyeka Okongwu (Atlanta Hawks)
Maximum possible contract: five years, $207 million
Eligibility: July 6, 2023 through the day before the start of the regular season
Free agency age: 23 years old in 2024

Mike Conley (Minnesota Timberwolves)
Maximum possible contract: two years, $70.9 million
Eligibility: July 6, 2023 through June 30, 2024
Free agency age: 36 years old in 2024

Maximum possible contract: four years, $75 million
Eligibility: July 6, 2024 through June 30, 2024
Free agency age: 26 years old in 2024
Career earnings: $29 million
Agent: Joel Bell
Probability of extending: Decent
The Sixers should be able to offer De’Anthony Melton a strong enough extension offer to keep him with the newly modified extension rules. However, they may want to keep an extension team-friendly as they look to maximize 2024 cap spaace.
Markelle Fultz (Orlando Magic)
Maximum possible contract: four years, $106.6 million
Eligibility: October 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024

The extension rules have been modified enough to allow Alex Caruso to get properly paid through one.
Josh Hart (New York Knicks)
Maximum possible contract: four years, $81.3 million
Eligibility: August 9, 2024 through June 30, 2024
Free agency age: 29 years old in 2024

Free agency age: 25 years old in 2025
Career earnings: $8.5 million

Eligibility: October 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024

Free agency age: 27 years old in 2025

Eligibility: October 1, 2023 through the day before the start of the regular season
Free agency age: 28 years old in 2025
Career earnings: $6 million
Agent: David Mondress and Bill Duffy
Probability of extending: Weak
Terance Mann is in a unique position where he’s already eligible for an extension before his most recent extension is set to kick in. The Clippers likely won’t extend him, however, since he could be a key piece in a potential James Harden trade.
Ben Simmons (Brooklyn Nets)
Maximum possible contract: three years, projected at $144 million

Eligibility: July 6, 2023 through the day before the start of the regular season
Free agency age: 24 years old in 2024

Maximum possible contract: three years, $97 million
Eligibility: July 8, 2023 through June 30, 2024
Free agency age: 27 years old in 2025

Eligibility: July 6, 2023 through June 30, 2024
